About this listen

The new Victorian chiller from the author of Radio 2 Book Club pick The Silent Companions sees a teenage seamstress convinced she can control people’s fates through the clothes she makes for them.

Dorothea and Ruth. Ruth and Dorothea.

Prison visitor and prisoner. Powerful and powerless.

Dorothea Truelove is young, wealthy and beautiful. Ruth Butterham is young, poor and awaiting trial for murder. When Dorothea is asked to visit Ruth as part of her charitable works, she could not be more delighted. Her first encounter with a murderer will provide the perfect opportunity to explore Dorothea’s fascination with phrenology and test her theories that the shape of a person’s skull can cast a light on their darkest crimes.

But the story Ruth has to tell - of bitterness and betrayal, of death and destruction - will shake Dorothea’s belief in rationality and the power of redemption. Can Ruth be trusted? Is she mad or a murderer?

Ending unexpected but not totally satisfying. Good narration. Miss Purcell books very rarely disappoints me

Really enjoyed this will be reading more of her books, I really thought the characters were well thought out and it encapsulates the dark gothic atmosphere of Victorian London

I’ve just finished and I am somewhat in shock. What an ending. I’m a fan of Laura and this is another triumph. Excellently narrated, too.

What a story

Enjoyable tale of adolescent hate, love, delusion and suffering. Clever twists and turns leaving one enthralled to the last sentence. As a male reader I was pleasantly surprised at a style of book that normally I would not entertain but nevertheless enjoyed.

Was a bit of a slow start but turned out to be a great book. We'll worth a listen if you have a credit to spare.

Great story

I really enjoyed the book and the story. They were excellent. Laura Purcell is great at telling a creepy gothic tale.

I have marked performance as low, but I liked the performance. The problem is that the editor has left in many of the swallowing noises of the narrator and it is really distracting and quite off putting. I couldn’t listen to it in big chunks because it was so irritating.

I listen to a LOT of audiobooks and I have never heard anything like this before. It is a real shame and feels like an oversight. I wonder if audible can fix it?

Good book slightly spoiled by editing.

TW: Contains graphic cruelty and abuse.

This is not an easy story. The characters are not easy to like. But yet I could not stop listening. Even though I wasn't fond of the characters, I still cared about them. A lot. The plot just kept twisting and turning and I did NOT predict the final outcome. It has the gut punch of a really good short story.
The narrator did a great job and delivered the story in such a way that one forgot about her voice and just heard the story.

A riveting story
