About this listen
The Asperger's Syndrome Bible for parents and professionals, newly updated with an introduction explaining the DSM-5
The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). Now including a new introduction explaining the impact of DSM-5 on the diagnosis and approach to AS, it brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.
Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine:
* causes and indications of the syndrome
* the diagnosis and its effect on the individual
* theory of mind
* the perception of emotions in self and others
* social interaction, including friendships
* long-term relationships
* teasing, bullying and mental health issues
* the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills
* career development.
There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.
Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.
'I usually say to the child, "Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome", and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking.'

This book has revealed alot to me, some of which i found upsetting for some reason. But overall it was really helpful and now i have a whole reading list to get through
LOL the only thing i disagree with was "Britan is very tolarent of people with autism" eh no.. no no no not at all. Where did he hear that propaganda? BBC radio no doubt. No I don't think Britan is up to scratch at all supporting people with autism. My school would just let them get bullied and did nothing to really help.
Amazingly insightful

While a lot of the researcher information comes from children or parents of asperger children do not be discouraged by this, it will aid you to gain a better understanding even if you are long past your teenage years or not a parent,
It is detailed and broad enough that you will run into plenty of things you can identify with and things you do not, cause after all even on the spectrum we are all different
How this book compares to others on the subject is hard to say as this is my first book on this matter, i did not feel that the author belittled or me or made me feel odd, pretty much the opposite, it is based on research and experience and so the information presented is not overly negative or positive, it simply is what it is and for that reason it also pretty much reads as a guide book.
The narrator voice was also calm and clear but by the end of the book you kind of tire hearing the term "Asperger Syndrome"
However, the book does end on an overly optimistic note but you cannot fault the author for that, considering a message of hope through self-acceptance is what most of us need.

A suggestion for anyone on a waiting list for assessment -- while you are reading this book, take notes of everything that comes to mind.
Categorise the notes into special interests, sensitivities, stimming, masking, social issues, collections and anything else you can think of -- and go back as far into your childhood as you can remember. I further divided my notes into three columns; childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
If, like me, you have short term memory issues, you will need to refer to these during the interviews, or you may forget pertinent information. Not all assessors are the same, and some have their own ideas -- you need to show them that you are autistic, you need to lose the masks -- otherwise you risk not being heard.
I wish you all well, and thank you for this book Dr Attwood.
Essential listening for everyone with an interest.
