Not bad for a first delve into United Kingdom history.
More than adequate depth on some parts. Although a little light on Welsh history.

This is the first reference book that I have tried in audio format, and it will probably be the last. I suspected that I would find it more hard going than reading a physical book, or even an e-book and that was certainly my experience.
In my opinion mor thought should have been given to adapting the book for audio presentation, for example there were numerous occasions where what I think were references given, but without any indication of what they actually are, there was also a complete 30 minutes chapter of references with the narrator just reading out web addresses, very boring and difficult to follow if you did want to find a particular reference.
I also found the choice of the historical events which were included rather strange, for example Henry VIIIs dissolution of the monasteries wasn't included and neither was the more recent miners' strike during Margaret Thatcher's term as Prime Minister, both of these events were crucial in England's history.
So unfortunately this book failed on two counts, firstly in it's choice of content and also in its conversion to audio, or the lack of any conversion to audio and just having the text read verbatim.
I can see why audio versions of reference books are important, but I am not convinced that just reading a physical book is the best way to present it.

This ‘version’ of English history must surely be seen as an insult to the much-mentioned ‘common man’ and an affront to serious historians. The historical omissions and the negation of all other countries’ achievements and contributions to science and the arts must be shocking to most sensible people. This work of propaganda seems to aim at bolstering the image of a continuous ‘Merry England’, wave-ruling, flag-waving world-leading country who peacefully took Wales, Scotland, and Ireland ‘under its wing’ to create a ‘United Kingdom’, ‘formed’ the United States, and strengthened every country that was colonised(!) The widespread bloodshed associated with the imposition of the Anglican Church is brushed aside as having being the work of Roman Catholic Queen Mary and the Jacobites, whereas the reigns of both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I took more lives and were far more bloody and terrifying. Not a work to be taken seriously by anyone.
