About this listen

'Satu Rämö's Hildur series is a wildly successful publishing phenomenon that has put the genre of "Nordic blue" on Europe's literary map' The Guardian

'Atmospheric and startlingly original' Sunday Times

Hildur Rúnarsdottir is the only police detective working on the isolated west coast of Iceland. She is desperate to forget her traumatic past by burying herself in her cases alongside her new trainee, Jakob Johanson. But Jakob's life has its own complications, and it soon becomes clear that neither can run from their pasts for long.

When a local man is found with his throat slit, underneath an avalanche that has buried much of the evidence, Hildur and Jakob must set their own problems aside and unravel the dark secrets to expose a killer . . .

Really like the fact it’s based in Iceland. Characters good and very well read. Good storyline too.

I really enjoyed this book. The descriptions of Iceland, the weather, the scenery and the customs are skilfully woven into a gripping investigation.
Well narrated too. Have downloaded book 2 and am looking forward to number 3 later in the year.

Was a moderately enjoyable listen, but feel the ending was building up for a sequel.

Annoying conclusion

A fascinating read convoluted and layered with a wonderful Icelandic backdrop- I’ll be getting the rest of the series!

Absorbing murder mystery with a wonderful atmosphere. The narration is lovely and having (what sounds to me like) the correct Icelandic pronunciation for names etc. enhanced the story even more.

Great narration

This book was a great introduction to Hildur, her colleagues and Iceland. It was moderately paced and set up story lines and historical events ready for the sequel. Wonderfully read.

The story was well worth the listen and I'm looking forward to the next books in the series. The narration was superb, and a joy to hear Icelandic names accented. The description of the Icelandic customs, weather and landscape was interesting, too. Certainly a recommended listen. Five stars all round
