About this listen

Long ago in London Town, at a time when the muffin man's cries began the day and the lamplighter ushered in the night, two young orphans lived together in the bleak, cold shelter of a public workhouse.

Lucy Wolcott and her little sister Glory have no one in the world but each other. Every day, they labor from dawn to dusk stitching blankets and sacks. There is scant little to eat and the nights are cold and damp. The only ray of light in their lives comes from the stories that Lucy invents, stories about a family she barely remembers, and a lot doll named Morning Glory who, Lucy promises, is destined to return to them someday.

When a deadly fever sweeps through the workhouse, the girls flee for their lives to the mean streets of London. There, they desperately try to figure out how to survive.

While searching through the muck by the river, Lucy finds an old, discarded doll, which Glory is certain is the long-lost Morning Glory. But Morning Glory is no ordinary doll. And how she leads the girls to the most surprising turns of fortune makes for a heartwarming story that brims with love, hope, and the truest spirit of Christmas.

Critic reviews

"A magical story, expertly incorporating a dash of Dickens with extensive historical research in the early Victorian era." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Enchanting Christmas story with all the seasons festive feels, Would recommend to get you feeling in the spirit of Christmas.
Narration is a bit iffy - could tell the narrator was American - some accents for London parlance was very off kilter, which was not endearing to the tale.

I thoroughly enjoyed escaping into this heartwarming Christmas tale. However the narrators voice is very annoying. She pronounces her T’s as a D’s for example kettle becomes keddle! Its a shame as it’s such a lovely story - if you can get past her pronunciation stick with it. The atmospheric descriptions of Victorian London conjured up some beautiful images in my head

Beautiful heartwarming story

We weren't sure about this when reading the inscription, and 20 minutes into the story we thought oh no, not a heart breaker!?, but from then it just gets better and better. If you like christmas you will love this story.. a real heart warmer and everything that christmas should be about. I would recommend this to people who enjoy christmas. We cannot get it back from our Niece who loves it.

I choose this book because of the title. It lead me through so many emotions. I couldn’t wait to reach the end to find out what happened.

I’m not a kid, but found this book adorable .

The story was nice, the narration wasn't. This was the wrong voice, weird accent, unlikable. I only listened to this book because it was free, short and,I wanted to know how their luck would turn.

A feel-good story for children

One of our favourite Christmas stories we have had for years and listen every Christmas, but a little weird that when they learn the thimble girl may die during the night, she isn’t even considered. Still a lovely story and brings alive how harsh Victorian life was for many children.

It took me a little while to get in to but once I did it was perfect, a lovely heartwarming Christmas story set in a doll shop. I quickly got used to the American/English accent.

Perfect Christmas story!

A delightful story set in Victorian times. Easy to listen to and not too long. The only thing wrong was the narrators odd accent, however I did get used to her voice and enjoyed the story overall. I would recommend.

Lovely Story, Perfect for Christmas

The story is ok, but spoilt by the strange accent put on by the narrator. It should’ve either been American or British - instead it seems to be a really awful attempt at an English accent which is really off-putting.

Weird accent spoils it

Certainly not just for kids! Have listened to three books by the same author and have thoroughly enjoyed them.

What a lovely book!
