Mr.Jackson's story from the Rail might be a short but is so tightly packed it holds more than many full length novels. An accident in the past had altered many of the people living in Railroad City, giving them paranormal powers but now many had Ben hunted down by the Army and dispatched. P.I. David McLane had been tested and found to be a non functioning paranormal until a case comes along in which he is required to find two items from a recent robbery - a box of radium and another containing a pair of rather special gloves.
Tightly written in the first person from David's perspective, the reader is taken on a kalaedoscopic swirl of bizarre characters, visual images of the city and the terbulance within his head. Quite brilliant.
Performed by Kyle Maraglio, the narration matches the speed and colour (blue?) of the text, with Brooklyn accent and cynical descriptions of various protagonists, such as,'slick as grease and loaded with money', or, 'mind as sharp as molten wax',making them his own. His voicings of the other characters is apt and well differentiated, too, imbuing character to each one even if only briefly encountered.
Another not to be missed tale from the Rail.
