About this listen

Jessica Clarke had been set alight 20 years ago. Her attacker, quickly tracked down and eager to confess, is still in jail, his career as a hitman for North London gangs now well behind him. So who is harassing Carol Chamberlain, the arresting officer, and claiming that he is one who burned the girl?

Now retired, Carol turns to DI Tom Thorne for help. Thorne is up to his neck investigating a series of killings which appear to be the result of a turf war between rival gangs, and he's fed up to the gills with reporting to DCI Tughan, so helping Carol out looks like a good deed in a naughty world. Only the world is about to turn much nastier, so nasty in fact that he finds himself longing for a straightforward psycopath to hunt down.

This is a powerful work, exploring the effects of violence and greed on the lives of those who exploit their fellow beings.

Critic reviews

"A disturbing and thrilling medical procedural with memorable characters and bundles of atmosphere." ( Guardian)

I am not a big fan of changing Narrator in a series of novels, especially when there seems no need to. that said this was well read.

I do take objection to the seemingly pointless musical interludes which had no affect on the drama or performance as a whole. not that the producers of these thing read these reviews of course.

Different and just OK

Compared to other books in the series, the narrator in this one was annoying to listen to and it took away from my enjoyment of the story. There were no other versions on offer and I wanted to listen to the books in order so I persevered but was left wishing I had read it instead. The storyline was good but I tuned out at times and fell asleep at times as the narrator just didn’t appeal.

Good book but annoying voice

Not my favourite in the series. Probably because it was abridged and felt disjointed in places.
I didn't much care for the narration. Once it occurred to me that the guy sounded like Trigger from Only Fools and Horses it got in the way for me.
Overall an okay listen.

Good story.

I found it difficult to focus on the story as it sounded like it was being narrated by Trigger from only fools, the I discovered that it was , bless him. A great actor, but has such a distinctive voice it was over powering.

unfair to complain about the narrator, but...

This one was a bit of a slog. I like these books but this one wasn't very good.

Not the best

Great story, but unnecessary music between chapters. I miss the authors narrative, the reading feels flat.

Good story

Billingham's prose reads well. It flows. Having finished this book yesterday, I somehow felt cheated as though something was missing... and then I realised the book had been abridged. Please don't.

Abridged and it showed

I’ve really enjoyed the previous books in this series but found this one a bit disappointing. I can’t decide whether it was the narrator, who I found really irritating!, or a combination of poor narration and not great storyline.

Disappointing

I found the narrator quite difficult to listen to and disappointing since we have excellent readers prior to this one.

Good story disappointed with the narrator

I must admit to being extremely fussy regarding narrators and having read the reviews regarding the narrator not being Mark Billingham himself was very apprehensive as to whether I could get through this book. I did and found Roger Lloyd Pack to be ok. looking forward to getting back to MB narrating and also I have seen Robert Glenister on some too who is brilliant with the Strike novels. Story wise probably my least favourite of the series so far but I am glad I didn't skip it.

Another enjoyable Tom Thorne novel
