About this listen
BURIED GOLD, OLD BONES.
WHAT SECRETS LURK IN THE DEPTHS?
A masterclass of small-town mystery and jaw-dropping twists from Chris Hammer, the international bestselling author of Scrublands, The Times Crime Book of the Year 2023 Dead Man's Creek and Crime Book of the Month (January 2024) Cover the Bones.
A body has been discovered on the riverbanks of The Valley, a remote community in the hills of New South Wales. The gold mine at the heart of The Valley was once the lifeblood of this region, but it has been flooded for decades. Over the years, many have tried and failed to bring it back to life. Now, most believe the mine is barren.
The victim is Wolfgang Burnside, deputy mayor - a champion of change or local schemer, depending on who you ask. He had been working on plans to take the Valley off-grid with hydro-power using the lake surrounding the abandoned mine. Until he was poisoned, his body dumped in the river for all to see.
Detectives Nell Buchanan and Ivan Lucic are dispatched to investigate. The warning is clear - there are secrets lurking in the depths of this Valley, secrets worth more than their weight in gold. What price will this town have to pay to ensure that they never see the light of day?
An epic, atmospheric mystery spanning generations set against a luscious backdrop and the twisting veins of gold that lurk beneath.

A struggle
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed previous Chris Hammer listens, he is an amazing storyteller, however I struggled with the interchanging timelines throughout this, but the characters are so compelling. I realise I’m in the minority but I find the narrator truly terrible to listen to, the over dramatic pauses and the slowness drove me crazy and had to turn up to x1.2. I found the same with the previous book but thought I’d give it another try…that mistake won’t happen again. I’ll get the book and read old school way!

Compelling
Fab continuation of Nell's story, with support from Ivan of course. I had to concentrate as there are a lot of charactrrs; the two timelines work well. Amazing narration by Lockie Chapman, as always. Hugely, highly recommended. Fingers crossed for another book.

Brilliant
Everything about this book is so good. The details and plot are excellent and the reader is just perfect. I tried not to rush my listening as I didn't want it to end but it's over and there will be a wait for Chris Hammer's next book.

broken river
The interlinking of the robbery, the drowning, Nell's genealogy, the flicking backwards and forwards in time, made this a confusing story to listen to. And it was very long with a lot of extraneous detail. Within all this though, the story, the plots, the characters were excellent. The narrator, however, had little variation in his voice. It was difficult to pick out the various characters from each other, and the narrative was in the same tone as individuals' speech.

Excellently plotted
Great story with well-defined characters and excellent plotting which make you want to keep reading. Highly recommended. it can be read standalone but there are also characters common to other books in the series which is a nice touch.

Gripping story in spite of dreadful narration
I’m really pleased i stuck with this one as i came close many times to giving up on it because of the awful narration. Great story, with good characters and many twists and turns.

intrigue
What a story teller Chris Hammer is. Love the duel narrative. Love the characters. Would like to know some of Ivan's flaws/ history and not just Nell's.

Great story
Good to have Nell Buchanan’s story further explored. Great descriptions of the landscape and complexities of the crime. Glad that the same narrator was retained. Very well performed.
