About this listen

World War II is over, and former German intelligence officer Captain Gregor Reinhardt has returned to Berlin, having been hired back onto Berlin's police force. When a man is found slain, Reinhardt embarks on a gruesome investigation. It seems a serial killer is on the loose, and matters only escalate when it's discovered that one of the victims was the brother of a Nazi scientist. Reinhardt realises that this investigation could cost him everything as he pursues a killer who believes that all wrongs must be avenged.

The adventures of Reinhardt was a new experience for me having never come across the character or author previously. The Ashes of Berlin is an enjoyable, engaging adventure full of twists and turns.  Gregor Reinhardt is an "old School" Crippo Officer who is asked to investigate the suspicious deaths of former pilots who were all connected by through their war-time service.  It been divided Berlin there is interest (or interference) from all four of city's governing powers who try and de-rail Reinhardt and his investigation.

This is an excellent audiobook which is skillfully narrated by John Lee. I only wish that earlier books in the series had been given the audio treatment as I feel they would have gone down well

Riveting listening. Wanted to hear it from start to finish. Narrator was very lively and engaging.

This book follows Gregor as he returns to Berlin immediately following the end of the War. Luke brings this period to life vividly, with empathy for those caught up in the struggle for survival. Weaving a brilliant "who done it" mystery into the lives of Germany's people, the Allied victors & the Berlin Police.

Third Book In The Series And Still Excellent.

I have enjoyed both books that are available on audio. The plot develops slowly but you are well entertained along the way. As the plot thickens and grows more complex it becomes edge of seat listening. The atmosphere of post war Berlin adds to the drama with some great characterisation. The choice of narrator for this is excellent. I really enjoyed this. A pity there are only 3 books in the series.

Luke McCallin has written a more taut, suspenseful and interesting case for Gregor Reinhardt in the Ashes of Berlin. Now a middle rank inspector in the Berlin police. Reinhardt has to juggle the balance of not been fully trusted by his colleagues and navigate the dangerous inter-allied relationship of Berlin's new masters. McCallin successful brings to the fore this world by having Reinhardt track down a killer seeking revenge for events that occurred in the war.

I was fan of the previous two books. However, I was never very interested in the Sarajevo and humanitarian setting that McCallin concentrated on. But, found in this edition McCallin skill as a writer had improved greatly, with more nuanced character, a strong plot and numerous twists I didn't see coming. While still having a humanitarian plot - it is the authors background - the book is the strongest in the series and skilfully read by John Lee.

McCallin is circumspect of the future of Reinhardt in the authors note. But, I would encourage him to keep up the good work and use the characters and world introduced in this book for further works.

Superior Adventure in War Torn Berlin

Great plot, well read, pity that the other books in the series not available. Normally I think where and when a book is set is not relevant, but this really works with a Berlin backdrop. Author has clearly done his research. Plot is excellent, reminds me a bit of Boris Akunin

I really enjoyed this book, the storyline which was rich and complex, the characters who were real and believable and finally how people lived/survived in Berlin just after the second world war.
