About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The Amulet of Samarkand is the first title in the New York Times bestselling Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud, author of Lockwood & Co. - a global No.1 show on Netflix.

When a young magician’s apprentice secretly summons an irascible 5,000 year old djinni to do his bidding, neither are prepared for the peril that ensues.

Nathaniel is plotting the downfall of his nemesis – a ruthless magician by the name of Simon Lovelace – and tasks Bartimaeus to steal the powerful Amulet of Samarkand from him, in order to exact his revenge.

But before long, Nathaniel and Bartimaeus are caught up in a terrifying adventure much bigger than either of them anticipated, involving intrigue, rebellion and murder…

Set in an alternate London controlled by magicians, this hilarious and electrifying series will enthral readers of all ages.

Critic reviews

"The truly original touch is the way Stroud alternates Nathaniel's story with the djinni's own knowing and irascible first-person narrative." (Guardian Review)

Great characters that are painted so well you see numerous sides to them and at times feel sorry for them, hate them and love them. But all mixed into a great story of spells and intrigue that keeps you involved. If you like Tom Holt you will like this and its a natural follow on to that Potter boy. Excellently narrated I have specifically looked at books narrated by Pacey. once read I bought the whole Barti. set.

Wow what a book! I thoroughly enjoyed this. It makes you laugh out loud and the narrator is brilliant. I had never heard of these books before. I am a Harry Potter fan, but was looking for something new. Found this by accident. What a find. Will keep an eye out for all Bartimaeus stories, I love Hiim.

Excellent! I'm Hooked!!

This is a great reading of this book (which I have read a number of times before). Steven Pacey hits just the right note in his delivery of the characters, especially Bartimaeus, and slips between the various narrative styles seamlessly. I downloaded the other two in the series as well based on this and was not disappointed there either. I would certainly recommend this title.

Well performed and a great read

I had read this book in my teens and loved it then and now, really enjoyed the humour in this series.

What made the experience of listening to The Amulet of Samarkand the most enjoyable?

A very two-world approach in which one could clearly see the action though eyes of either tog the main heroes - Nathaniel and Bartomeus. Every perspective change was perfectly timed and made me feel fresh in 'the new body'.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Amulet of Samarkand?

(SPOLOERS) I particularly remember the moment Nathaniel first summoned Bartomeus. Their conversation was so unusual and perspective-changing that it hooked me up to listen to the book within 2 days.

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favourite?

I mostly enjoyed the way Steven performed Nathaniel. His voice was high and suitable to a little boy yet at the same time Stevens voice was nowhere near that high.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book made me laugh out loud a couple of times due to Bartomeus's unique and very flippant view of the world surrounding him.

Any additional comments?

I've read a physical copy of the book (in different language) long time ago and now that I've listened to it again I must say that to listen to it read by the amazing Steven Pacey is a much more enjoyable and full of an experience.

Unusually approach to an alternate reality fiction

What made the experience of listening to The Amulet of Samarkand the most enjoyable?

The story is a great twist on the child (magical) prodigy, and read beautifully. I re-listen to this regularly, and there is always something I havent remembered to make me smile as it is so packed of ideas and character.

What did you like best about this story?

I do love the idea of the prodigy over-reaching himself, and summoning a demon which he then cant get rid of, and who hates him but has a hold over him. Yes they work together, but its more of a cease fire than an alliance.

Which character – as performed by Steven Pacey – was your favourite?

The best charater has to be the Djinn Bartimeus - you immediately know just how much he feels that working with the boy is totally beneath him. His tricky ways of trying to stick to the letter if not the intent of any task are beautifully expressed, and despite the hatred still make any child want to have him at their beck and call (and adult too for that matter!)

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Its a laugh out loud book, but also well balanced with other emotions coming into play to make this a well rounded listening experience. Great for drive along or as something to concentrate fully on. With a very saitisfactory ending leaving no disappointments, but still wanting to reead the next book very quickly - just how it should be.

Any additional comments?

This is the first book in the trilogy, but you can read the prequel "Bartimeus" before this without givng anything away, but I would read this first to get the best out of the unexpectedness of the character when he literally pops into Nathans life.

Funny, magical, historic romp
