About this listen
Born in the storm that doomed his father, Connavar grows to manhood among the mist-covered mountains of Caer Druagh, where the Rigante tribe dwell in harmony with the land and its gods. But beyond the border, across the water, an evil force is gathering strength, an unstoppable force that will change the world beyond all recognition. Haunted by malevolent spirits and hunted by evil men, Connavar sets out on a spectacular mission to save his people.
From the master of the genre, this is a tale of love and honour, friendship and courage, as Gemmell explores the intriguing worlds of Celtic myth and earth magic.

- Arabic accents of the sort you might hear at an amateur production of Aladdin
The producer didn’t spot that the narrator uses ‘sword in the stone’ on several occasions which is unforgivable!
Planning to send a letter to the production company and ask for a refund. Massive let down which is an insult to fans of Gemmell
Excellent Gemmell book massively let down by awful narration

Adjoa Andoh's narration is brilliant in my opinion (and there are a lot of folks who don't like it). Comparing her to Sean Barret's rendition of the Drenai novels is unfair I think. They're just both very different. I don't care that she doesn't do Scottish accents when the characters probably demand it. I don't care that she's female, narrating a book with predominantly male protagonists. I don't think DG would either. To me, it sounds like she cares about her storytelling technique, and that she's genuinely enjoying the tale which she reads at a very nice pace, and throws a lot of effort into telling it.
The story itself is typically DG but after reading so much "realistic" fantasy, Gemmell's world has vibrancy, colour and character that sets it apart from a lot of the sub-par offerings out there at the moment. This is a great story, compelling and exciting, and as someone who read the Rigante books quite a while ago, it's fresh & new.
I don't know how Amazon handles refunds, but considering there are polar opinions on the narration, I'd urge you to give this a go yourself and settle into another one of David Gemmell's rich and entertaining tales. If you can't take the accent after the first 5 minutes, just refund. I loved it.
Brilliant Narration

Adjoa Andoh is an excellent performer and brings great emotion to the story. There were times when I filled up and I don't remember doing that when I read it myself! There was some inconsistencies in pronunciation e.g. 'Garf' and 'Gaff' (I don't mind how things are pronounced as long as it's consistent) and there was a section where Con was called 'Sword in the Stone' twice by the Morrigu. Also, did I hear the Shrek three pigs accent in there somewhere?
Overall fantastic package and great that we now at last have Gemmell books on Audio. Midnight Falcon next!
Love the Rigante Series

The performance didn't quite hit home for me. All my criticisms are purely personal, as Adjoa Andoh is a good performer. But for me, with the main character being a male along with a lot of the supporting cast, I think a male narrator would've worked better. Further to that, I thought there were some strange accent choices, with Bristolian for the Rigante particularly grating.
On the whole though an enjoyable read/listen and I'll certainly be continuing with the series.
Great story and beginning to the series

I thought the narration was on the whole good.. however and this is a big one for me.. I cannot imagine any gem mel fan imagining the rigante accents as anything but Scottish , the whole series underlines how they are lowland and highland clansmen.. subjugated in the later books by what can only be imagined as the English .. albeit in a parallel universe ..
This won’t stop me buying or listening to them all, but a huge gaff by the producers imho.
Good listen

In a story with the vast majority of characters being male, a female trying to put on a man's voice for literally every conversation doesn't work. The accents used for 'foreigners' is terrible, overly stylised and difficult to understand.
Worse still, during battle scenes the narrator actually speeds up the dialogue significantly making it not only frenzied but again hard to follow.
The story is great, the telling is bad. They really need to re-record this with someone else. Why didn't they stick with Sean Barrett? He's voiced much of the other Gemmell series and is much, MUCH better suited.
Great story. AWFUL choice for narration
