Filling a massive gap in D-Day literature, marine historian Stephen Fisher provides fresh insight and unrivalled coverage of one of the least well know of the D-Day landings.

Although they are well known, coverage of the action on Sword, Juno and Gold beaches is relatively sparse and overshadowed by the more famous American landing at Omaha. In fact, the capture of all the beaches were events in their own right, full of drama and incident, and in particular, Sword Beach turned out to be crucial in securing the Normandy Landings.

An important reminder that D Day was an Allied collaboration and that Sword Beach is as noteworthy as Omaha - it’s just that Steven Spielberg didn’t make a movie of Sword. A balanced and factual account of one of Britain’s ‘finest hours’ by men to whom we will always remain in debt for their unsurpassed courage and bravery.

This fascinating story closely involves one of my Aunts…. Marjorie Warwick, who was liaising between the Royal Navy and the production team on the X-20 series of mini submarines in preparation for the D-Day invasion.
There is much more to be written about this subject and I hope that Steven Fisher, who writes so interestingly and eloquently, will let us have a book which sets out the whole story in his style.

This is a very refreshing review of the assault on Sword Beach which not only details the challenges of the warfare but also challenges the myth that it was a walk in the park as some in the US would have you believe.

I chose Sword Beach because I wanted to learn more about the D Day Landings other than Omaha which seems to get so much publicity. I was hoping for an easy read , maybe because I watched the Longest Day , thinking Sword Beach was a walk over . It is a harrowing tale .There is no escaping the death and injury and the heroism and sacrifice of those who took part. Stephen Fisher’s detailed account of the Royal Navy and Landing Craft crew is so detailed , it is horribly real. By the end I was beginning to think that we had lost the Battle of Normandy but he makes the point that the victory came at great cost . Those who criticise the Allies for not winning a quick victory in Normandy with such overwhelming odds would understand more if they read Stephen Fisher’s account . It is worth listening to again .

But a bit of help for the narrator with pronunciation would have helped. The nautical words only needed a bit of guidance to avoid making bits of the story seem to miss a little

Great info but presenter lacked military knowledge when describing formations and equipment! Would have benefited from military experience.
