About this listen

What I thought I knew: in 1998, Maryanne Doyle disappeared, and Dad knew something about it. Maryanne Doyle was never seen again.

What I actually know: in 1998, Dad lied about knowing Maryanne Doyle. Alice Lapaine has been found strangled near Dad's pub. Dad was in the local area for both Maryanne Doyle's disappearance and Alice Lapaine's murder.

Couldn't Get Enough!

Absolutely loved this book.

Compelling, well written and excellently narrated. With the right amount of twists and turns, I just couldn't stop listening, was gutted when it came to an end and will be looking for more from the author.

Good story

Good solid detective story that doesn’t rely on mass murders or blood & gore! You do need to suspend belief and accept that a police officer would deal with the conflict of interest the way she does but a good tale none the less.

Irish Gem

A great story with more twists and turns than Brands Hatch. Credible characters in a well sculpted landscape. Beautifully narrated and a very satisfying ending. Bravo!

Just ok

I struggled to stick with this book, but I found it easier towards the end. I found the characters quite bland

Good book

I enjoyed this book. It was a sad subject though.
I loved the narrator's voice, it was read with feeling.
Good strong characters too.

No way is this a new author!? Next book I get will be by Caz Frear!

I cannot believe this is a first time author! I’m very much a fan of her work already and will be downloading her next book at the end of this review. I’m unsure as to how much the excellent narrator added to my overall 5 stars, but to state that she blends seamlessly between characters and with near perfect accents would be an understatement. This is a synergy of writer and narrator talent not to be missed. Im a writer myself, so I did guess the dark ‘twist’ relatively early thanks to the foreshadowing, but that’s no criticism, as it is so brilliantly subtle and peppered throughout the story I don’t expect many readers to arrive at the same conclusion so early on. I was disappointed that the short appearance of a character (literally dialling in his performance) from my home town of Birmingham was portrayed as a bit ‘thick’ which was a little cliche, however having first hand experience of the actual social climate, I am not inclined to argue :-) Fantastic work by all involved.

Had enough about it to keep me interested

I listen to my books whilst walking the dog or doing housework. I normally listen to Grisham/Childs/Connolly/Baldacci etc. However as this was in the 2 for 1 offer thought I'd give it a go. And so glad I did ! Well written and excellently narrated. Plotline was good and kept me interested. characters were believable and pace was entertaining.
