About this listen

Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2023

This audio edition is read by the author, Natalie Haynes.

In Stone Blind, the instant Sunday Times bestseller, Natalie Haynes brings the infamous Medusa to life as you have never seen her before.

‘So to mortal men, we are monsters. Because of our flight, our strength. They fear us, so they call us monsters’

Medusa is the sole mortal in a family of gods. Growing up with her Gorgon sisters, she begins to realize that she is the only one who experiences change, the only one who can be hurt.

When Poseidon commits an unforgiveable act against Medusa in the temple of Athene, the goddess takes her revenge where she can: on his victim. Medusa is changed forever – writhing snakes for hair and her gaze now turns any living creature to stone. She can look at nothing without destroying it.

Desperate to protect her beloved sisters, Medusa condemns herself to a life of shadows. Until Perseus embarks upon a quest to fetch the head of a Gorgon . . .

I really enjoyed this more sympathetic version of Medusa but I’m afraid I’m not a fan of authors reading their works. Authors are authors, actors are actors.

Interesting take on Medusa

Loved this book - bonus that it's read by the Natalie Haynes herself, too! Had me gripped from start to finish.

Loved it!

I loved this book. I started following Natalie's work after reading Pandora's Jar, of which the chapter on Medusa was my favourite. If you enjoyed this book, and haven't already I would recommend Pandora's jar also.

I have always loved Greek mythology, in all it's messed up and bizarre quality. but still never really questioned the telling of it. There are many sides to every story and yet we still agree with the most popular telling. Of course Perseus is useless and incredibly naive/stupid. so why is he a hero exactly?

performance was excellent. all the right emotion in all the right places.

can't fault it!

Natalie Haynes is such an engaging performer and speaker I actually prefer her audiobooks to the paper book. I think you get more of how she intended the words to sound. Plus I adore here rant about a certain ‘hero’ … I snorted out loud much to the surprise of a fellow dog walker (top tip wear obvious headphones or you may look a bit mad) thoroughly recommend & do have a packet of tissues for the chapter narrated by the Snakes.

Powerful Re-telling

Just fantastic!
