About this listen

Brigid Donovan is down on her luck. Her husband dumped her for the biggest stereotype around, his secretary, and her family mansion is a decaying wreck. All she wants is to get it restored, enjoy the peace and quiet of living in eight hundred acres of primordial forest, and rebuild her life.

Fate seems to be against her. First, her cat starts to speak to her. And what does he say? He's not what he seems to be—seriously? Like a talking cat is normal. He does tell her that she's the great-granddaughter of a fae lord, and very powerful. Only, that doesn't seem right. Where's her magic? Why didn't her family tell her?

Things aren't as picture perfect as they seem in her hometown of Kilchis, Oregon. In fact, they haven't been for a long time. For one thing, her restoration team is a pack of werewolves, and her new bestie is a witch. What's going on? Brigid has to find out fast or she could lose it all—her mind, her magic, and her life.

This is a great magical storyline. The characters are well written and good fun. I liked the way I was questioning every character as to if they were good or evil. A fantastic performance.

This was an entertaining story with cozy mystery vibes, and I found myself really enjoying it. I liked reading about an older leading lady with some life experience under her belt as opposed to the usual 20 somethings normally featured. The story wasn’t all lightness and fluff as there are some bad moments that happen throughout the story and people get hurt. But it was told in a way that held my interest, got me invested in the main character and has me ready to come back for book two.
I also enjoyed the narrator. She had an easy to listen to tone that I felt fit well with the character. And she gave decent tone variation when it came to secondary characters, so it didn’t seem like everyone sounded the same even though it was all one person. Overall, this was a good series starter and I look forward to checking out more in the series.

I enjoyed this book immensely, it is a fascinating start to a new paranormal fantasy series featuring a variety of supernatural beings, shifters, witches and fae, all living amongst ordinary humans. Brigid Donovan thought she was one of those ordinary humans, but she turns out to be anything but one. Her husband left her for his secretary and after the divorce was finalized, she moved back to her hometown, Kimchis, Oregon, and into her family mansion, which needed a lot of work. She had contractors, Craig Whalen’s company, start the renovations before she arrived, but it was still a work in progress when she moved in. Strange things start to occur, but she shrugs them off at first, thinking she was tired, and when they got too much, she called to make an appointment with the local doctor. The doctor turns out to be someone she knows very well, Gabe Ambrose, her first. Gabe gives her a somewhat reasonable explanation for all the odd things going on, and she takes it all in and goes with it. He recommended speaking to one of the local witches to get a better idea of the magic surrounding her, another high school acquaintance, Sophia. Brigid's circumstances become even more complicated when someone is trying to take what is rightfully hers, and with Mr. Mittens, her familiar, she will get those responsible and set things right. But can they? This first book of the series lays down the foundation for what lies ahead, the world building is fantastic, as are the character growth and development. This intriguing and cleverly plotted story captivated my attention the entire time. I am looking forward to what happens next for Brigid and her allies.

🎧📚🎧 And for fantastic narration, Veronica Giguere performs the voices for all the characters, does a great job covering both the male and female roles, giving each their own unique voice, making it easy to follow along and tell who is who. She had a complete understanding of the characters she portrayed and was believable in every role she played. She set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and had you feeling them all. This versatile voice artist is entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to.
