About this listen

A Christmas miracle! Her paralysis, cured by the stranger who only needed to hold her hands. So why was she cruelly robbed of the gift so soon afterwards? Why is she dying? Psychiatrist Ben Sheldon is perplexed. Why the rapid mental decline in his patients? How does the death of the local priest and the arrival of an exorcist from Rome tie the pieces together? but a bit weird - in a good way. I didn't like the narrator, very clear and distinct but incredibly slow which spoiled the book for me. The story was good, a bit odd to start with but built into a satisfyingly tied up conclusion. I'd read more of this author but I'll be avoiding the narrator in the future, the delivery just doesn't suit me

interesting

J.J. Kennard's "Spite" (subtitled 'The Past Can't Hurt Us, Can It?') weaves an intriguing tale that encompasses science, religion, the supernatural and the unknown. The author crafts a slow building narrative that cleverly sets the scene and draws the listener/reader into a mysterious tangle full of strange goings-on, then expertly ramps up the intrigue, before delivering a power-packed punch in the tense third act. I found my pulse racing as the climax of the story approached and, at its conclusion, found myself wanting to immediately go back and listen again.

Narrator Sally Roughton's excellent performance really enhanced the story telling, with a range of voices and accents that served to differentiate the various characters.

"Spite" is a slow burner (in the best sense), that really lights up into a blaze as the story progresses. A very enjoyable listen.

A slow building tale that drew me right in
