About this listen

Since 1980, depth psychologist Bill Plotkin has been guiding women and men into the wilderness - the redrock canyons and snow-crested mountains of the American West - but also into the wilds of the soul. He calls this work soulcraft.

There's a great longing in all people to uncover the secrets and mysteries of our individual lives, to find the unique gift we were born to bring to our communities, and to experience our full membership in the more-than-human world. This journey to soul is a descent into layers of the self, much deeper than personality, a journey meant for each one of us, not just for the heroes and heroines of mythology.

A modern handbook for the journey, Soulcraft is not an imitation of indigenous ways, but a contemporary nature-based approach born from wilderness experience, the traditions of Western culture, and the cross-cultural heritage of all humanity. Filled with stories, poems, and guidelines, Soulcraft introduces over 40 practices that facilitate the descent to soul, including dreamwork, wilderness vision fasts, talking across the species boundaries, council, self-designed ceremony, nature-based shadow work, and the arts of romance, being lost, and storytelling.

Critic reviews

"Here is an abundantly wise and carefully crafted survival guide for the wild soul currently dozing (or dying) at the heart of your civilized life." (David Abram, author of The Spell of the Sensuous)

I loved this book but I have to admit I find the voice tricky to come to terms with. There is so little emotion or creative performance.

Amazing book, not as good reader

In current spirituality there seems to be an overemphasis on ascending. Breaking free from the highs and lows of our human everyday lives. Bill Plotkin offers a counterpart to spiritual ascent, soul descent. As every positive pole needs a negative, so ascent needs descent. He masterfully weaves intimate and personal stories to illustrate how and why we all should seek out soul initiation and why the underworld journey is important to all seeking their true path and unearthing their gift to the world.

To ascend we need to descend

Soulcraft is a soulful and essential guide to the field of depth ecology and for inner transformation in the wild. I was particularly touched by the stories of his workshop participants out in the wild which I assume was through Animas Institute. Thank you very much for the audiobook. The narrator did very well. I look forward to Wild Mind.

Soulful guide

So much in here, I need the book rather than audio to look back and take it all in. The narration is monotone and robotic at times. I fell asleep quite a few times whilst listening. Fascinating content.

I need to read the book!

Essential reading

This book has arrived at the perfect time. Whilst the narrator is somehow overly expressive and yet monotone, it doesn’t take away from this in depth look at soul discovery and exploration. Have bought the book as well which I rarely do!

Just what I needed!

Some books I believe I am meant to listen to at significant points along my life’s journey. This beautiful, honest book was one of these. Thank you!

Especially parents… so we can make for more soul -centred children. I love Bill Plotkins work and this is probably his most accessible and life changing work. The narration is fine, if lacking a little emotion.

Every human needs to understand these concepts

Loved the book and the stories shared in it. Didn't enjoy the narration, could have been done with more involvement.

Good book, not so good narration

Explores concisely soul and spirit and how these aspects have been disowned in much of our modern culture. But more than that, this book gives hope and practical suggestions. How and why our lives need reconnecting consciously through our unique individual and personal experience so that our inherent knowing of who we are can have the potential to be lived.

An antidote…
