About this listen

Other children receive xylophones. Susan just had to ask her grandfather to take his vest off. Yes. There's a Death in the family. It's hard to grow up normally when Grandfather rides a white horse and wields a scythe: especially when you have to take over the family business, and everyone mistakes you for the Tooth Fairy. And especially when you have to face the new and addictive music that has entered Discworld. It's lawless. It changes people. It's called Music With Rocks In. It's got a beat and you can dance to it, but...it's alive. And it won't fade away.© Terry and Lyn Pratchett; (P) Corgi Audio Classics Fantasy Fiction Science Fiction

Critic reviews

"Classic English humour, with all the slapstick, twists, and dry observations you could hope for." ( The Times)

Tony Robinson is and will always be in my mind, Baldrick. His vocalisations cannot possibly meet the descriptions penned by Pratchett. I don't think anyone could do the voice of death without a sound studio and a good sound engineer. Tony's vocalisation of the troll characters leaves a hell of a lot to be desired. They are stone beings not Darleks!

Excellent book not sure about the narration

I liked it and cannot wait to listen to the next book Thad has death as the leading character

Any additional comments?

Tony Robinson's performance seems to me to be perfectly matched to Terry Pratchett's Discworld, and Soul Music is no exception. The book has a wealth of great characters, from the rock playing troll, Cliff, to Susan, the logical and reluctant granddaughter of death, to the crew of rebellious eighty year old wizards. The book is extremely quotable ("Be there or be a rectangular thinge") and a good story all round.

Classic Pratchet

I am gradually aquiring the series digitally having loved them on cd for years, I had forgotten how much I loved some of the more stand alone books. Tony Robinson's narration is wonderful as always and the book is witty and funny. Just lovely.

I often overlook this gem in the discworld cannon

Excellently told story of how music and magic combine on the Discworld. Real life parallels about forming a band.

Terry Pritchett at his best
