About this listen

Introducing DI Marnie Rome, Someone Else's Skin will enthral fans of Val McDermid and Mo Hayder. Devastating, brilliant, and heralding an outstanding new talent in crime fiction, this is the crime debut of the year.

Some secrets keep you safe, others will destroy you....

Detective Inspector Marnie Rome. Dependable; fierce; brilliant at her job; a rising star in the ranks. Everyone knows how Marnie fought to come back from the murder of her parents, but very few know what is going on below the surface. Because Marnie has secrets she won't share with anyone. But then so does everyone. Certainly those in the women's shelter Marnie and Detective Sergeant Noah Jake visit on that fateful day. The day when they arrive to interview a resident, only to find one of the women's husbands, who shouldn't have been there, lying stabbed on the floor.

As Marnie and Noah investigate the crime further, events begin to spiral and the violence escalates. Everyone is keeping secrets, some for survival and some, they suspect, to disguise who they really are under their skin. Now, if Marnie is going to find the truth she will have to face her own demons head on. Because the time has come for secrets to be revealed....

I was recommended to this book by a friend and was not disappointed, it well deserves the Theakston's prize. Well rounded characters and a plot full of intrigue, I look forward to Sarah's next novel.

The book was better in some parts than others. There was incorrect pronunciation too. Maybe it could have been better edited.

Good in places

This was my first Abigail Thaw but it will not be my last

the domestic abuse and control and the need to inflict pain saddened me.

Any additional comments?

The subject matter makes for some depressingly realistic reading but the story is very engaging and I couldn't find fault with anything

Very Good listen

My first try at Sarah Hilary's work. The characters are well drawn and the pictures painted by her words are vivid. Too much emphasis on violence and menace for my taste but the suspense was kept til the end and overall an interesting story.

Rather dark but gripping in parts

Any additional comments?

Loved, loved, loved it. Fast paced, action packed, twists and turns, brilliant. Marnie Rome is an excellent tortured soul, her partner is also extremely endearing. I think the best books have characters you can love, or sympathise with, or want to help and this book hits the nail on the head with all its characters. the story line whips along at a fast pace, keeping the pressure up until the very last word. A very well deserved 5 stars

Brilliant!

Very typical of quality British crime drama - strong characterization, lots of back story and a realistic plot. Add quality writing and a fine narration and you have a very good listen. I will certainly add the author to my list.

Very British police drama
