About this listen
The second hard-hitting action thriller in the best-selling Dan 'Spider' Shepherd series.
There's only one thing more dangerous than a corrupt cop...and that's a corrupt cop with a gun.
When a group of armed police in an elite unit turns maverick and starts to rip off drug dealers at gunpoint, undercover cop Dan 'Spider' Shepherd is given his most dangerous mission so far.
Shepherd is ordered to infiltrate the tight-knit team, to gain their confidence and to ultimately betray them.
Facing men with guns is nothing new for the former SAS trooper, but it's the first time he's had to investigate his own. And the job couldn't have come at a worse time for him.
As Shepherd finds himself in the firing line, he has to decide exactly where his loyalties lie.

Loving this series!
A massive Jack Nightingale fan, I’ve put off listening to Spider Shepherd books for some time.
Finally I thought I would give them a go and haven’t been disappointed. Soft Target is a great continuation of book 1, a nail biting thriller alongside Dan Shepherds battles with his home life.
Just about to start book 3 and confident I’ll enjoy just as much.
Paul Thornley, as ever, is fantastic with his reading of these books.

Good second installment
His was my Second Stephen Leather book and was an improvement from the first book in terms of character development and story so I will stick with the author for a few more books just to see how our" relationship* develops

Excellent
I found this author whilst looking for other books that Paul Thornley narrates. I have to say I have now done the first 2 in quick succession and will continue as soon ad my next credit arrives.

Classic Spiderman
I haven't been listening to these in order so it was nice to hear Katra appear for the first time.
Great story, I couldn't stop listening and excellent narration.

Nothing Soft About This One!
The Spider Shepherd thrillers are just simply one of those guilty pleasures. Well written, well structured and full of glorious action. This is slightly longer than your average thriller but it really doesn't feel like it, the plot ticks along at a cracking pace and incorporates Spider's home life along with his multiple identities as an undercover cop. It's a tale well spun and when it's delivered by Paul Thornley the while thing takes on a new dimension. He has a slightly halting style, leaving a slightly longer gap than normal between sentences which I think works very well. Maybe as I get older it's nice to be able to assimilate what's been said before plunging on to the next point! It's more than that though, he delivers the bluff side of Shepherd and the hard side of the action down to a T and yet has enough character voice variety and deftness of touch when it's required.
The story itself is just of the kind that you would expect from Shepherd and Leather. After an intriguing opening that has you asking just who is who more than once to the explosive ending that ties it all together nicely there is a lot of action, plenty of moral dilemmas for Spider to contend with (are the bad guys all really so bad?) and some touching parts of his personal life. Put together this audiobook is an excellent combination and although it clearly has aged a little it still feels fresh enough to carry today.

Great story, likeable lead man
Nice to hear an action book narrated in an English accent. Just a shame the narrator speaks in the same rhythm no matter what the text is. If you like police army action stories and Line of Duty, you will like this audio book.
