About this listen

Sofia Khan Is Not Obliged is the hilarious and fresh debut novel by Ayisha Malik.

'Brilliant idea! Excellent! Muslim dating? Well, I had no idea you were allowed to date.' Then he leaned towards me and looked at me sympathetically. 'Are your parents quite disappointed?'

Unlucky in love once again after her sort-of-boyfriend/possible-marriage-partner-to-be proves a little too close to his parents, Sofia Khan is ready to renounce men for good. Or at least she was, until her boss persuades her to write a tell-all expose about the Muslim dating scene.

As her woes become her work, Sofia must lean on the support of her brilliant friends, baffled colleagues and baffling parents as she seeks stories for her book. But in amongst the marriage-crazy relatives, racist tube passengers and polygamy-inclined friends, could there be a lingering possibility that she might just be falling in love?

Lovely, twisting story. A feel-good book, but not dumb. Great holiday listen, or just to switch off. Well-read.

Any additional comments?

Wonderfully written, very witty and incredibly funny. Subject areas we take for granted in regards to family pressure and conforming. The love of the family and religion and their influence on life decisions.I enjoyed the voice used and Sofia's journey in a world of intolerance. Her wanting it all and finding the suitable balance.Marvelous!

Storywise a very easy, light and enjoyable listen, Malik has created characters you're really on side with and it's written in a very casual way almost as if a friend is chatting to you.

Not so keen on the narrator- generally a bit of a stilted reading, but coming to life when a Sri Lankan accent is called for. Unfortunately the often required 'American' accent for Nayim was absolutely terrible and therefore totally distracting!

Fun and easy listen - not keen on narrator though!

Loved this book and Sofia Khan is such a great character - this story lurches through Sofia's life at break neck speed, its so funny I laughed out loud, I felt her confusion, confliction and heartbreak and felt anger at the irrational racism she sometimes faces,
Its all there
As well as being a whirlwind of a story, it was a little window into the lives of young Muslim women in Britain today

I see there's a sequel to this book - I don't usually bother with sequels, but I'd love to know what happen to Sofia next so I think it'll be going onto my wish list

Loved meeting Sofia!

Lovely funny lighthearted read would recommend for Muslimahs and non Muslims gives a good insight with funny family bits and cultural norms

Light read

The written style of the book in diary posts, messages and emails can make it hard to distinguish between head talk and actual conversation. Once I got over that the characters were quite likeable and I am nearly tempted to listen to the next one.

Average

Pretty much all cliche. Characters felt like romcom Hollywood style, predictable story and painfully obvious unrealistic ending.
