About this listen

An exquisite new short story from the Sunday Times bestselling author of Small Things Like These and Foster.

'A genuine once-in-a-generation writer.' The Times

After an uneventful Friday at the Dublin office, Cathal faces into the long weekend and takes the bus home. There, his mind agitates over a woman named Sabine with whom he could have spent his life, had he acted differently. All evening, with only the television and a bottle of champagne for company, thoughts of this woman and others intrude - and the true significance of this particular date is revealed.

From one of the finest writers working today, Keegan's new story asks if a lack of generosity might ruin what could be between men and women. Is it possible to love without sharing?

'Every word is the right word in the right place, and the effect is resonant and deeply moving.' Hilary Mantel

'Claire Keegan makes her moments real - and then she makes them matter.' Colm Tóibín

Huge Claire Keegan fan but found her narration difficult to listen to. I will go buy the book instead.

I bought this book at the back of listening to a review of it on The Women’s Podcast. They weren’t wrong! Really interesting story line. Hopefully these type of men are becoming few and far between.

Great Irish misogynistic love story

Evocative and poignant, This short story tells of a flawed character, and uncovers the primary reason for his dysfunction that means life and relationships can only be miserable unless he finds a way to recognise and address his shortcomings.

Beautifully written

The absolute genius of Claire Keegan’s writing deserves every accolade. Every sentence, every word and comma are perfectly placed. She takes you quietly by the hand and lays life bare. Delicate and devastating in equal measures, this story takes a look at misogyny, generational trauma and the humanity at the core of it.

Leaves you longing for more- sheer perfection

Beautiful, brutal and dark. A shame there's only one story - I bought it on preorder and didn't realise how short it was. but the writing is so luminous I really dont mind. Gorgeous use of language.

Gorgeous novella

A story based on the importance of love and respect being taught from birth! Brilliantly written and read by the author.

Short but thought provoking!

This may be a short story but it is full to the brim with imagery and food for thought. I loved it. As always with Claire Keegan stories it leaves you wanting more. A clever writer and a brilliant voice for our times.

Excellent

I liked that the author read her book. I’ve read The Quiet Girl over & over, but the narrator didn’t have the voice I had in my head. Claire Keegan was just about right for me. It is depressing, but it’s real; a salutary tale.
They say, if you want to know how a woman will turn out, look at her mother; they, being the sort of men written about in this book. But I’ve never heard anyone say the same about a man & his father. Perhaps, watch how a man’s father treats his wife. Sons need to see that their father respects their mother, or the circle repeats itself.

Well observed & beautifully written.
