About this listen

A well-placed kick into Kanti’s stomach dropped him back to the deck, grasping his gut and gasping for breath.

“If you ever utter the phrase ‘skeleton crew’ again, I promise that I will find out,” Captain Ateri said calmly.

“And when I do, I will rip chunks of you out with my bare paws...and toss them into the recycler one by one...until all that remains of you...is your blood in my fur...and your screams in my ears.”

But the captain is the least of Kanti’s concerns. A huge monster named Commissioner Sarsuk thinks the crew of the White Flower II is out of control, and that executing Kanti publicly - a slow, messy execution - is the perfect recipe for getting the ship back under his clawed thumb. Now Kanti is living in terror - a slave raised believing himself free, a criminal even before his birth. Everyone thinks he’s someone he isn’t: a playboy reduced to working at the dump, a spiteful son trying to make amends, and perhaps even an excuse to recycle every last officer, crewman, and cub on board. The next few days are going to take this unlikely hero and the rest of the crew on a wild ride to the brink of mutiny, isolated deep in space, some 1500 light years from home.

Amazing story right from the get go

Skeleton crew is the first audio book I have from the amazing Gre7g Luterman. I am not unfamiliar with his works, however I had not read this book before listening to this wonderful dictation.

The story had me from the first few paragraphs, so much so that I listened to the first chapter a couple of times just to make sure I had heard it correctly. It absolutely gripped me that any story should start with something so somber, and from that point on I was hooked.

The character descriptions and narrations let you really get a feel for those in the story, as I feel any good story should. You find yourself immersed in their worlds and their daily lives, which makes so much of the story so heart wrenching to me. You don’t necessarily need to know everything about the world and the species as they are well described throughout, meaning that you can listen to this as a stand alone book, or alongside others within the series.

The narration is really easy to listen to, clear and well spoken. As someone who has ADHD and struggles to focus on reading a book the whole way through, it’s been a delight to hear this from start to finish. I found it very easy to remain focused and enjoyed every minute.

I highly recommend Skeleton Crew if you love sci-fi and drama, and truly believe you’ll be as hooked as I was.

A good sci-fi story!

I met the author at an event in Florida and was pleased to hear that he had audio forms of his books, so I made sure to download one when I got home. I’m pleasantly surprised at how good this book is, it has a solid main character with understandable goals and motivations and good dialogue.

My initial impression of the narrator is mixed - I like his voice, but I don’t think there is enough differentiation between characters at times (perhaps I am just spoiled by the likes of Jeff Hays). This is especially prevalent when a female character is speaking, though I understand not everyone has the vocal range to do a higher voice consistently. Aside from this, the voice work is great, with a couple of different accents and I think even singing at one point.

Another small gripe I have is that the main race of creatures in the book are a little hard to imagine occasionally. Maybe I missed something, but I feel like the Jeru were not described adequately enough to get a full picture of what they look like. The cover art helps with this of course, but I wish it had been fully developed in the text also.

Overall a great book though, with a well-written story and a satisfying non-cliffhanger ending. There is another book in the series which I absolutely will be reading, but I appreciate that the ending is written in such a way that ties together the ends.

Finest Furry Space Opera

Skeleton Crew was recommended to me as one of the first furry books I ever heard of, and... I'm not disappointed. I really soaked the universe. Book itself is great, and in this audiobook narrator performance is really on high level. Great audiobook to listen on the bed, with closed eyes!

A great story all the way through

From the first lines of the book I was hooked on the story, attached to the character and wanting to know what happened next. The only thing I wasn’t 100% with was the narrator at first but as the book went on I grew into it and by the end felt it was a perfect fit.

I loved the audio performance!

I have to be honest… I requested a review copy of this audiobook because I love to listen to Piers Ryman. The story itself isn’t my normal type of book to read so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the story, not just Piers excellent audio performance.

The story took us on quite a journey with Kanti. The farther I got into it the more I wanted and needed to keep listening; I had become thoroughly engrossed and didn’t want to stop. There are two more books in this series and I think I will really enjoy listening to them.

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

Extremely Creative, Excellent Narration

Sci-Fi fans, you have to give Gre7g Luterman’s Skeleton Crew series a try! The entire series is available in audio, performed by the marvelous Piers Ryman, and I highly recommend it. Gre7g Luterman is a new author for me, and I really enjoyed his writing style.

Clever and very creative, the first novel, The Kanti Cycle, introduces us to this futuristic, outerspace world. It’s an addictive story, which just got more interesting every step of the way, and I’m a sucker for a terrific hero’s journey tale.

As captivating as Kanti’s story is, it’s made even more engaging by Piers Ryman’s narration. Bright and lively (heck, there’s even singing!), Mr. Ryman brings these characters to life. Coming up with unique voices for this vast and varied cast must have been quite a challenge.

A fast moving, exciting, and emotional story, I can’t wait to find out what challenges Kanti and his comrades face in the next episode of The Kanti Cycle, Small World.
