About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

In Silverview, John le Carré turns his focus to the world that occupied his writing for the past 60 years - the secret world itself.

Julian Lawndsley has renounced his high-flying job in the City for a simpler life running a bookshop in a small English seaside town. But only a couple of months into his new career, Julian's evening is disrupted by a visitor. Edward, a Polish émigré living in Silverview, the big house on the edge of town, seems to know a lot about Julian's family and is rather too interested in the inner workings of his modest new enterprise.

When a letter turns up at the door of a spy chief in London warning him of a dangerous leak, the investigations lead him to this quiet town by the sea....

Silverview is the mesmerising story of an encounter between innocence and experience and between public duty and private morals. In his inimitable voice, John le Carré, the greatest chronicler of our age, seeks to answer the question of what we truly owe to the people we love.

Silver View for the silver - haired

A more modest story than some of Le Carre's other works. But still vivid and sharp witted

one last slice of the cake

…or one last scotch from the bottle. Whichever way you view this final piece from le Carré, it matters not- it’s quality is all you have come to expect from the pen master- thank you David Cornwell- it’s been an utter blast!

Disappointed

Too many characters to find a core that led any where. I thought story was very un leCarre’. Had to listen several times to grasp the story’s point.

Slow Burn Joy

I’ve loved Le Carre since a child. Not read this before so it was a treat to unfold a new story. Toby Jones’ narration is excellent.

Unexpected John Le Carré

Really liked this story, rich characters far from Smiley, Estehasé, Cranmer etc. The idea of the ‘break in the event of emergency’ think-tank was good as was the secret underground location idea.

Excellent, of course

Took a while to become clear, but put my trust in John le Carre. He doesn't disappoint. Loved the spare, focused story. Narration was very good too.
