Andrew is a great storyteller and would love to hear more from him too. Only negative is the distinction between some of the characters isn’t always obvious and I sometimes found myself lost as to who was speaking at times.
Definitely looking forward to the next books in the series though!

This book has an interest take on 'Magic' and I loved it when the system and history was explained later in the book. There is plenty of action and fights. As I said before I liked the second half as it was more group building, character development and learning creative ways to you use powers but that is more personal preference.
I like all the main characters and they were very realistic in their motivations and believable. From the way the book ended and hinted on the next book I'm really interesting in that one as it sounds like it's going to be more 'powering up' / getting stronger to defend what the group has built and the inevitable coming fights.
Very strong narrations that keep me on the edge of my seat on the action parts and gave all character distinct likeable voices.

However, despite this minor complaint, it should not detract from the overall quality of a book that provides an entertaining and extensive cast of characters, a well-realised world and an interesting system of magic. While Jon Christensen is the main character in the book, the supporting characters all contribute significantly and feel fully realised.
The narrator does a good job with this book, coping well with the task of making the extensive cast sufficiently distinctive from each other most of the time and keeping a suitable pace in what is quite a lengthy book.
Overall, this book did a good job of world-building for subsequent ones while at the same time providing enough story for it to also work as a book in it's own right and not just as a book one of a series.

We have a fringe culture, maybe a sub-culture that's just under the surface of the normal world. Objects of power bond with people giving them gifts that could also possibly be thought of as curses given their everyday struggle for survival.
The plot is captivating and quite humorous and the book itself is quite unique in all the right ways!
Thanks to great characters and a well written plot I found myself immersed in the book and really enjoyed it from start to finish. It's both relaxed and full of life. I rally enjoyed it!
