About this listen

For half a lifetime, journalist Martin Scarsden has run from his past. But now there is no escaping.

He'd vowed never to return to his hometown, Port Silver, and its traumatic memories. But now his new partner, Mandy Blonde, has inherited an old house in the seaside town and Martin knows their chance of a new life together won't come again.

Martin arrives to find his best friend from school days brutally murdered, and Mandy the chief suspect. With the police curiously reluctant to pursue other suspects, Martin goes searching for the killer. And finds the past waiting for him.

He's making little progress when a terrible new crime starts to reveal the truth. The media descend on Port Silver, attracted by a story that has it all: sex, drugs, celebrity and religion. Once again, Martin finds himself in the front line of reporting.

Yet the demands of deadlines and his desire to clear Mandy are not enough: the past is ever present.

An enthralling and propulsive thriller from the acclaimed and bestselling author of Scrublands.

This was enjoyable, eventually but not as good as “Scrublands” which I listened to immediately prior to this. I wondered if the change of narrator would make a huge difference but it didn’t. These changes often spoil a series but Nicholas Osmond was wonderful. However, and this is nothing to do with the narrator and I don’t know if the writing was dramatically changed, but for a lot if this book I really didn’t like Martin nor Mandy very much. Overall though it was very good but had a great deal to live up to following the first book.

Very good but...

It’s not often book 2 is as good as, or even better than, the first - Scrublands.
This is. Unputdownable.

Fabulous.

I enjoyed this tale, although it did seem a bit convoluted and long.. Good listening though.

Quite enjoyable

Just brilliant! The characters are complex and real. The story is complex and satisfying. Can not recommend it enough!

Fantastic second book in the series

Perhaps I am a bit harder on this one because I listened to it straight after Scrublands. Authors generally copy fiddle and paste a bestseller formula, but this one is too close and not quite as good. I should have left a longer gap. Having said that its still a good yarn and I like to setting and the Detective / Journalist plot lines.

A bit too much of an encore

Really good story and brilliant narration. Will buy another book by this author and narrator as a result.

Really enjoyed this, and its predecessor. Great, well-crafted stories, just loved every minute. Both books deserve a decent TV series (not a movie - wouldn't do it justice). Hope Chris Hammer does more.
