About this listen

On 14 June 2017, a 24-storey block of flats went up in flames.

The fire climbed up cladding as flammable as solid petrol. Fire doors failed to self-close. No alarm rang out to warn sleeping residents. As smoke seeped into their homes, all were told to ‘stay put'. Many did–and they died.

It was a disaster decades in the making.

Peter Apps exposes how a steady stream of deregulation, corporate greed and institutional indifference caused this tragedy. It is the story of a grieving community forsaken by our government, a community still waiting for change.

“However painful the story of Grenfell is, it is one we must hear. Apps' powerful testament tells us how injustice was manifested and how lessons still fail to be learned.”–David Lammy MP

“A staggering achievement, both a testament to the victims, the bereaved and the community of Grenfell and a painstaking, forensic investigation into the causes of the crime itself.”–David Peace, author of the Red Riding Quartet

“Compelling, rigorous, utterly forensic and so very needed. This book has to be the moment that things change.”–Lucy Easthope, author of When the Dust Settles

Exposes an extremely broken system which let people needlessly die. Very well written and explained in detail simple to understand.

Broken System

Brilliantly researched and written. Pacey and engaging. An indictment of how landlord and house builder profits take precedent over human lives

Necessary and fascinating

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A very thorough well researched piece of work on all the cogs, decisions and choices that led to this catastrophe. The mimicking of accents of various enquiry witnesses, survivors and relatives of the deceased by the narrator is however unfortunate and very unnecessary. It made me cringe each time I heard it and took something away from this pertinent story.

Compelling, detailed and well researched

the shocking reality of the compound effect of mistakes and misjudged assumptions and negligence

sad but true

Extensive, compassionate and clear. A must read for us all to truly understand the importance of this tragic event in our society.

A vital read

This is a very powerful read. For those familiar with Perrow’s Normal Accident theory, this is a classic example of where there was so many red flags, near misses and actual incidents that have ample warning of what was going to happen.

It is also a damning indictment of our successive governing parties who played hot potato with the safety of our buildings. Of how cutbacks and greed have informed the choices of those with the intelligence and power to do better.

It’s also a human tragedy. It’s heartbreaking, This book will make you angry and sad in equal measures and well it should.

A must read for every H&S Professional

An excellent exposition of all the faults, omissions, carelessnesses and couldn’t give a damns that lead up to the Grenfell fire. Listen & make sure it never happens again

You must read this book

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

A read/listen that hits deep. A view of the event and some of the things after. Would be good to get an additional few chapters in a couple of years time.

The heartfelt approach

As the years go by I wonder when will the families finally get answers to the most horrific crime in my lifetime, we written and narrated and the final chapter which isn’t short should remind us all that this tragedy should never be forgotten or be allowed to happen again

Powerful and moving

A spectacularly researched and written book.
As an architect I have followed some of this but the detail here was not in the press or enquiry reports.
This book brings humanity to the residents of Grenfell. Something they were not afforded by policy makers and just about everyone else involved.
So many people making ultimately lethal errors, omissions, mistakes, and knowingly creating murderous homes through incompetence, greed, ideology and laziness.
Heartbreaking. A smack in the face wake up call. You must listen to this.
The narrator is also excellent. Listening immerses you in this storey completely.

Incredible, chilling, should be a compulsory listening.
