About this listen

Noah Vance's life is turned upside down when he receives a letter asking him to become the guardian of his orphaned niece and nephews. Noah knows he can't care for four children and run his law practice alone, so he places an ad in the newspaper seeking an eligible she-wolf as wife.

Catherine Danielson arrives in Barton, expecting to hand over the care of her niece and nephews to their uncle, but when he begs her to remain until he can find a wife, she can't say no. She's put her life on hold to care for the children since the death of her brother-in-law. Another few months of waiting won't matter. It isn't as if there is a home and husband for her to return to.

As Catherine gets to know Noah Vance better, the boarding house awaiting her return and the career-focused life of a spinster appeal to her less and less. Unfortunately, her alpha has other plans for Catherine - plans that will destroy her dreams and ruin the life she wants to build.

She Wolf Wanted, the second book in the Barton Pack, is a wonderfully written historical paranormal romance. Jane B. Night definitely stepped outside the box, creating a unique and fascinating shifter world shaped by civil war and slavery, resulting in poverty and orphaned children. Catherine and Noah's characters are well-developed, and I found them quite appealing. I like how their story and the romance unfolded. Garrick Peterson did a great job portraying the characters, including the children. However, his reading pace was on the slow side, and at times monotone, I found myself getting distracted with other things, and I had to rewind. Otherwise, She Wolf Wanted is a well-written, sweet and enjoyable story.

I found the world Jane B Night created for her series to be quite unique. While the main protagonists are wolf shifters, unlike most shifter romances, they seem closer to human in their choices and behaviour. Perhaps that is the cultural limits of the United States after the Civil War. I am not sure, but the usual raw animalistic nature of shifters often portrayed in shifter romances seems to be confined by the more conservative nature of society at the time. That isn't to say that the characters lacked for chemistry because they certainly had that in spades. However their circumstances threw them into a familial situation before the romance could build and honestly four children below the age of 10 does not a romantic environment make!

That isn't a criticism because this book is about coming to terms with the past and losses of an enormous magnitude. It is about second chances in life and it is about family and community. And, as the end of the audiobook suggests, it is a stepping stone in a much larger plot that will potentially present a huge challenge to the Barton Pack.

I enjoyed this story. There is a gentleness to the story that was really easy to listen to. I did find the narration a little slow in places but it also matched the setting of the story to a large extent.
