About this listen
“What darkness within the Labyrinth awaits?”
After defeating the Shadow King and opening the gateway to the mysterious Labyrinth of Onizoso, Reece's hopes are dashed when a surprise attack leaves his girlfriend's life hanging in the balance.
To save her, Reece and his friends must enter the labyrinth in hopes of finding the one person who may be able to bring her back to life...but in a place where players turn into Shard Wraiths, their hopes may already be lost.
Now Reece will have to navigate a strange new world fraught with dangers, while fending off a pursuing army and racing against the clock. And with his arch nemesis lurking just outside, the labyrinth might be only the start of his troubles.
To protect the ones he loves, Reece will have to challenge both his fears and principles, or risk losing everything and becoming a Shard Wraith himself.
But the Labyrinth holds many dark secrets, and what he discovers within may not only change the outcome of their mission, but redefine the very nature of the game world itself.

He himself has made a great world and based his world off a great game and style, as a final fantasy XIV player I can see parallels all over the place and I approve its good stuff. But there are frustrations here for me as I may be slightly older than the target audience for this.
See one thing that Mr Scott has done here is take (maybe not intentionally) some cues from the Japanese style of story progression -
Thing happens
Characters stop to gawk at things happen.
Characters mental thought process stops everything for a solid minute+ of reading from Mr Summerer
Character is reminded that timing is crucial
Character reminds self
Character re-reminds self that he needs to act now.
Character acts.
And it's always In this order. Each section suffers from this. For me, this is annoying because he also overexplains & oversimplifies them.
By this point in the story Rhys(Reece) has seen so much suffering and pain and yet he still repeats all the same mistakes.
The same panics for things he's done hundreds of times before.
The same child like gawk at things being new, the same forgetting who and what he is despite being near death at all times and the worst part for me, is that he's already done all this and more for 2 books.
You have felt and dealt with the stakes already. Why are you shocked and EVERYTHING, STILL!
It doesn't make sense to me that a character is unable to actually "grow" in any meaningful way, but because he's the main character, continues to succeed regardless.
As it is Reece is my least favourite thing about these books, which is made more annoying because he's the main bloody character.
So why 4 Stars?
Because everything else is damn good, interesting characters, particularly back in the "real world" and Reeces companions are also great, my personal favourite being Rembrand, followed by Ico and Maxis.
I'm curious with the next book (which I shall listen too) how Val Helena will be handled.
Im writing this review at nearly 4 hours into the book and so I may add comments or updates after I finish, but based on other reviews, the book doesn't get amazing AFTER the first half.
We shall see.
The world and characters are great.. But

I think if I were reading the book I don’t think I’d mind as much, but when listening to the audiobook hearing it say
‘...hits for 230 damage, ... hits for 231 damage,... hits for 229 damage...,’ becomes a bit boring to listen too. A better way would be ‘ ... hit three times for 690 damage!’ As I say. This is only a thing wrong during listening and I doubt it is as bad as reading.
I can make a bet that almost an hour can be lost in this story for this reason.
As I’ve said I love everything about this story and where it is going so I would still recommend to everyone I know, keep up the good work!
Love the story, sometimes hate the repetition.

First the whole area of the Labyrinth of Onisozo, just so great, the fact that the area itself is like a whole new world is amazing and they that it's described is spectacular, leaving not a lot to the imagination yet so much to imagine.
After they are out of there, the book goes from showing how powerful the group is to showing how equally weak they are depending on the circumstances.
Again just an amazing story and cannot wait to start the next one
Better and Better
