Who better to fight back the darkness of the world than the one responsible for most of it?

Daylen, once known as the Great Bastard, the Scourge of Nations, Dayless the Conqueror, has lived in hiding since his presumed death. Burdened by age and tremendous guilt, he thinks his life is coming to an end. Unbeknownst to him he’s about to embark on a journey towards redemption where his ruthless abilities might save the world. Everfall is a world of perpetual day where the continents float in an endless sky. If one jumps from the continent they will fall for many hours before returning to the same place from which they fell. Skyships rule the air powered by shining sunstone and industrial darkstone. A legendary order of knights bears mystical powers which they use to hunt out the dreaded shade, monsters that regular people turn into if trapped in darkness for the length of a fall.

It is a world of enchanted swords, merciless monsters, mystical knights, and hard magic, filled with tales of wonder and adventure.

Why do I say that Shad is green? Well, two reasons.

One, I watch the mans videos on Youtube and have a basic understanding of who he is, and in addition I listen to EFAP, a podcast/stream I recommend for reasons not elaborated here. From watching his videos and guest appearances I must say that he might struggle conveying subtle hints through his writing, maybe fearing they will be too subtle. The result of this is the matter of conveying a message very ham fisted, making the message as bright as the sun, leaving the reader to reflect upon the message to e lesser degree. Or not to reflect at all. Subtlety forces our minds to think, to figure out a puzzle and to work with the book instead of the book just giving us all we need. This exercise is very satisfying to the human brain, as we love patterns by default.

Two: This is his first real book. This dictates less experience and I expect his future work to be amazing in comparison.

Overall I liked the book enough to buy the second addition (when released). The world building was close to bulletproof but I have some gripes with all the conveniences brought on by the main characters way of thinking and his abilities. With an especially ham fisted convenience towards the end of the book.

I give the book a 4 out of 5 as the gripes I have doesn't outweigh the positive effects this book gave me, and I do recommend it as it's world is one of a kind, and truly a marvel to experience.

love the world building though some of the characters fall a bit flat for me

I was expecting something really generic from Shad but this story caught me off guard. Great story and an interesting high fantasy world concept told through its inhabitants. Gruesome and full of theorycrafting. Loving it!

I really enjoyed this book and often found myself making excuses to listen to it. I am already preying there is a book 2. It was well written and narrated and I felt like I actually knew the characters both laughing and in complete shock at different parts of the story. Loved it

it was engaging, indepth and all around enjoyable. it introduces a believable magic system that isn't needlessly complex and it actually uses real historical elements in the world building.
which is why it is one of the best books I've read

A very well thought out and delivered story with many twists and turns (some predictable others completely unexpected). All world building was done naturally via character interactions. There is also plenty of material for a lengthy series and I wish the author well in completing it. However, there is a severe lack of MACHICOLATIONS!!
