About this listen

Rosamunde Pilcher's major best seller, also a successful TV film, now available in unabridged audio download.

As spring comes to Scotland and the hills burst into life, a dance is planned for September. The invitations summon home the group of people Violet Aird has cared for most in her long life. The oldest, strongest and wisest of them all, she sees Alexa, her vulnerable granddaughter, find love for the first time while the decision to send her little grandson away to school is driving parents Edmund and Virginia even further apart.

Far from them all is Pandora, the glamorous, exciting girl who ran away 20 years before. All will converge on Scotland this September, bringing their stories with them.

Bit ruined for me as I put it onto disk and unfortunately the auto record missed out the end of sentences at the end of a disc and beginning of the next. I need a 5 minute overlap to remember what is going on. Now Audible has messed about and it is difficult to get an overlap. Why to companies have to mess up a good system. I play them at night when going to sleep.
Jilly Bond is a great reader. I love RP her stories are always so interesting, the first the Shell Seekers is becoming a classic and I love in some books a bit of reference to another book, as September does to Shell seekers. Using the same characters.

Great Pilcher story

Great narrator but I found this story a bit sad and drawn out. Not as good as Winter Solstice.

Excellent narration. Story a bit drawn out.

Disliked some of the accents. Archie Isabel and Vi would not have had such strong Scottish accents - they were posh well off educated Scots who would have had less strong accents possibly with a slight Scottish twang only. Similarly Pandora who had been away from Scotland for more than 20 years. The very strong accents jarred.

Great story

I really enjoyed listening to this audio I liked the narrator and the story, I though the ending the last 35mins went on too long and did get boring otherwise it was a good listen.

Enjoyable

As most of the reviews mentioned, the plot took a little while to gain momentum, but the groundwork laid paid off in the end. Characters were well-rounded and felt honest. I loved the descriptions of the Scottish Highlands, as I'm in Glasgow at the moment. A beautiful and poignant tale that will stay with me a long time. This would make a wonderful vacation/holiday read as I felt transported. The narration takes a little time to get used to, but Jilly hit her stride as we got going. I highly recommend this audio book!!!

wonderful story

Another beautiful reading by Jilly Bond. She has a lovely warm voice and she brings you right into the story. This story dragged a little to begin with. I hadn't read The Shell Seekers before reading this one so was unacquainted with Noel and disliked him intensely to begin with.
Over time however, I really got into the story and enjoyed it immensely. I wasn't expecting the ending and it shocked me intensely. I loved the setting and have decided to go to Scotland to go have a look for myself. It just sounds beautiful.
I only gave the story 4 stars as initially, I really disliked a couple of the characters and also, I found the social classes aspect really annoying - for example (spoiler) I was a bit outraged that Edie hadn't been invited to the party - however, in spite of this, generally I loved it.

Lovely book - unexpected ending

This book and Rosamunde Pilcher’s Winter Soltice are my two favourite reads. Jilly Bond read it brilliantly and the voice of Lottie sent shivers down my back.

A lovely book

During this time of lockdown I was looking for a long, easy listening novel and thought a Rosamond Pilcher would probably fit the bill. It did, to a certain extent although I did find the story increasingly unbelievable, but it’s very gentle and has a feel good factor. However, I must make a note to never, ever buy a book read by this narrator again. She completely ruined the novel with her exaggerated delivery, infantile and incredibly irritating. It was as if she was reading to a class of eight-year-olds. Her portrayal of any woman over the age of 40 seemed to turn them into ancient crones, just dreadful.

Ruined by the narration

Jilly Bond's narration was stunningly good. She brought all the characters to life and the voices were distinct from one another. A complex family drama with a few twists and turns.
An enjoyable read.

A good family saga

I love Rosamund Piltcher and have hugely enjoyed many Audible renditions. The general narration of this was beautiful and i don’t mean to be unkind but the Sottish accent was awful. Henry is particular was so grating I really could hardly bear to listen. Sounded like an ancient Jimmy Crankie. Would have been much nicer in narrators own voice.

Loved story but accents is excruciating
