About this listen

In 1940s London, each cobbled street is strewn with ghosts of soldiers past. And for the women, their battles are on the home front.

Flossy is embraced by the colourful mix of characters working at Trout's, who have turned their sewing expertise to war work. Dolly Doolaney, darling of the East End, helps Flossy settle into wartime life.

All of the sewing bees play their part in defending the front line, but as the Blitz hits London, can Dolly manage to contain the secret that binds them all?

I loved learning about the daily life of girls through the war. I had no idea where the sewing bee originated from and the part women played outside of the land girls.

Anne Over is the best narrator. I only listen to the books with Anne narrating as she makes you feel like you are actually in the East End of London. The way she narrates her voice just flows perfectly x

Absolutely beautiful story

I’ve been listening to about 100 books through 2020 on various platforms, and this one is hands down the queen of all books in my libraries! It had me glued to my earphones like no book ever before, and I’ll miss the characters dearly... Being very familiar with stories from WW2, having grandparents experience the occupation and parents born during the last year of it, (Norway) this story hit very close to home. The narrator did an excellent job bringing it to life, and I will most definetely look for more books read by her!

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh out loud in parts and feel sad in others and yes I did get impatient with some of the characters as times especially Flossie who I thought was a bit flaky and sorry for herself and even said out loud a few time "get over it Girl"
