إذا كنت من محبي الروايات الهادئة التي تغور في عمق التفاصيل اليومية بحسٍّ كلاسيكيٍّ ممتع فيجب عليك الاستماع لهذه الرواية التي تعدُّ من أفضل روايات الفترة التي كتبت فيها عام 1907 حيث صوّرت المجتمع والتاريخ والشخصيات بشكلٍ ينقل القاريء إلى زمنها فورًا.

تتحدّث الرواية عن رجلٍ فوضوي يُدعى فيرلوك يُمضي أحد عشرَ عامًا كموظف في إحدى السفارات ويملك أسرةً صغيرة تتألّف من زوجته ويني فيرلوك الشابة الممتلئة الصدر الضيقة الملابس العريضة الوركين والأنيقة الشعر دائما، وأم زوجته السمراء البدينة المصابة بعسر في التنفس وتعتمر شعرا مستعارا أسود اللون تعلوه قبعة بيضاء، أما أخو زوجته ستيفي فهو فتى رقيق ووسيم ولكنه فاشل يعمل مراسلا وتستهويه مطاردة الكلاب والقطط الضالة في الأزقة..

تلك هي أهم مواصفات الأسرة التي غادرها فيرلوك إلى لندن لينصت إلى رؤسائه في العمل وفي مقدمتهم القنصل "ورمت" القصير النظر والعضو الخاص بالمجلس وقد وبّخه بعنف على تقاريره الأخيرة التي اعتبرها غير نافعة ثم خاطبه

قائلا: "نحن غير راضين عن موقف الشرطة هنا".

فما هي وظيفة فيرلوك الحقيقية وبماذا سوف يُضحي ليصل؟!
