About this listen

It is the 1980s, and Stamford Holmes is still living in the shadow of his famous grandfather. Languidly living on Sherlock's fortune, he reluctantly agrees to do some work as a consulting detective - if only to provide 'Doctor' Watson with material for the Sunday papers.

Watson, on the other hand, brings all the bumbling enthusiam he can muster to their new cases, forever aping and quoting both their grandfathers - and wielding a magnifying glass.

As they dash towards the eerie howls of a new hound of the Baskervilles, their sleuthing is interrupted by a busload of tourists, and shots ring out as they approach Baskerville hall - fired by exercising army commandos.

Such problems never plagued the great Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson...

Peter Egan stars as Stamford Holmes and Jeremy Nicholas as Watson in this loving parody of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters.

The six adventures in this collection are:

The Case of the Grandfather's Client
The Case of the Maltese Pearls
The Case of the Reading Undertaker
The Case of the Shadowed Minister
The Case of the Neglected Farm
The Case of the Missing Link

Producer: Paul Mayhew-Archer

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in January 1983.

I like these. They’re gentle and clever. Like others I just wish they’d done more. Worth a credit though.

Likeable

I first heard these stories on Radio 4 Extra and am so pleased I discovered them. Having grown up reading the Conan Doyle stories, I found this tongue in cheek homage, set some hundred years later, truly delightful. I particularly enjoyed the return visit to Baskerville Hall. Peter Egan was perfect as the laconic and brilliant descendant of Sherlock Holmes. A gentle comedy and a charming update on a much loved fictional character. I just wish they had made more.

As my title says, I'm glad I found this, a funny spin on Sherlock Holmes, kind of reminded me of the film Without a Clue (although Stamford Holmes is still the genius in this), as a fun parody of the great detective.

The performance was great, the stories were fun, it's all just a bit too short,

Glad I found this

I enjoyed this collection of mystery stories- they were funny, and the narration was excellent. I did wish that each story was a little longer, hence the four stars.

Enjoyable collection

Didn’t enjoy this at all.
Not at all entertaining - bloke playing Holmes speaks far to quickly and is rubbish.
Stories are rubbish too.
Don’t waste a credit on it.

One star for everything and that’s being generous
