About this listen

The controversial first-hand account of what really happened in the south Atlantic skies.

Sharkey Ward commanded 801 Naval Air Squadron, HMS Invincible, was senior Sea Harrier adviser to the Command, flew over 60 missions and was awarded DSC. Yet had he followed all his instructions to the letter, Britain might well have lost the Falklands War.

His dramatic first-hand story of the air war in the South Atlantic is also an extraordinary, outspoken account of inter-service rivalries, bureaucratic interference and dangerous ignorance of the realities of air combat among many senior commanders.

As Sharkey Ward reveals, the 801 pilots were fighting not just the enemy, exhaustion and the hostile weather, but also the prejudice and ignorance of their own side.

Perhaps the most incisive account of the realities of the Air War over the Falklands.

This gripping and sincere account of the actions of 801 Squadron, and the internecine rivalries between the Light Blue and the Senior Service is writ large. This paints an altogether different picture to the officially accepted narrative promoted by 'authority figures' in the field which make it all the more compelling.

Highly recommended.

A salute to the mighty Sea Harrier!

I had the last laugh.
Sharkey goes full Partridge.
Don’t get me wrong I love the detail and the anecdotes. I am always staggered by the efforts of the FAA, and the SHAR is my favourite aircraft- what a machine. The stuff about the CAP’s was draw dropping.

But like other pilot’s books the brilliant action is marred by constant score settling and angry outbursts. I know it’s his story, but blimey mate it distracts from his skill and effort.

Needless to say…

The Fleet Air Arm did what the RAF could not. Transmission ends. Air cover at sea is non negotiable

Compelling account of the air war brilliantly put together and showed the problems they faced between ships and the enemy

Gives a great insight into carrier flying. The complexity of operating aircraft from sea and the air battles over and around the Falklands. Also a view on the politics I feel you would find in any large organisation.

Excellent read.

This has to be the worst book I’ve ever read! From what I discovered unless you were in 801 Sqn you weren’t up to it and his distain for the RAF borders on pathetic! This is nothing more than an opportunity to have a dig at everyone else who isn’t Sharky Ward! I expected better from someone with his reputation and skill as a pilot.

Chip on both shoulders

The contents of Sea Harriers and the Falklands war is fantastic but it becomes hard to listen to Mr Ward continuously make reference to how amazing he is and how inferior everyone around him is. The ego of this man is incredible

Good story but hard to listen to.
