Get a someone familiar with the Scots and Gaelic languages to narrate. Otherwise not bad. Hard to listen to.

Poor pronunciation.

I liked the social history side better than the constant shenanigans of the royals and power hungry individuals. The almost constant mispronunciations of place names and people was really irritating. Surely someone should have proof-listened to this prior to release.

Good conscise history of Scotland.

The audiobook content is ok, and even much of the narration is fine, but the constant mispronunciation of people, places, and pretty much everything else really lets the audiobook down.

It's clear that there has been absolutely no effort made in this regard, and words the narrator hasn't seen before are just guessed at arbitrarily. Many, many of these are not obscure words and would have been incredibly easy to check

Terrible pronunciation

The narration in the audible version is very soporific and I gave up listening to it. Ended up buying the kindle version and actually quite enjoyed reading it. If you want an introduction to Scottish history buy the book avoid this audible version.

Good book, terrible narrator

Would it have been so hard to get a Scottish person to read this book? I can barely concentrate cause my brain is correcting every second word. I would give the performance no stars if I could. The information is good, the reading of it is terrible.

This should’ve been read by a Scot. The pronunciations are awful

I rarely write reviews, but I can’t help myself with this one. This actor has really not done the job here. He’s not looked into one correct pronunciation and really, that’s lazy work. It’s almost done deliberately! If you read a place or word you don’t recognise or feel sure you know how to say, look it up!!!! Do the work!! Also, less importantly, but a bit puzzling- why not get a Scottish actor to read? At least we might assume they’d have an inkling of what country they were talking about!

Not good enough

It is amusing at first but becomes very tiresome as it goes along. Some Scottish words are easily miss-pronounced and can be forgiven. The irony is not lost that Scottish History for Dummies was read by someone who is not a native and has not been proof read by someone who is. The technical detail of the book is really good and worth a listen. If your from Scotland then prepare to shout at your listening device.

Pronouncing name places, words and pretty much everything else.

Interesting book,
spoiled by the narrator’s inability to pronounce significant words correctly like Papacy and to pronounce significant Scottish places as well!

Terrible narration

This was a really informative read and a lighthearted way to learn more about Scottish history but throughout the narrator is incapable of pronouncing even the most basic Scottish names/places almost to a point that it sounds deliberate, which is distracting.

Really informative... but...

The narration is absolutely awful, quite simply because the narrator has done no research on how to pronounce even the most simple of Scottish names or places. I doubt he's ever been to Scotland. Shockingly poor, I will sadly be returning the book because of this. I am around quarter way through and the content is great, so I may buy the paper or kindle version.

Awful narration ruins this audio book
