About this listen

Fifteen-year-old Kendra hasn't felt safe since she began to recall devastating memories of childhood sexual abuse, especially because she still can't remember the most important detail: her abuser's identity. Frightened, Kendra believes someone is always watching and following her, leaving menacing messages only she understands. If she lets her guard down even for a minute, it could cost Kendra her life. To relieve the pressure, Kendra cuts; aside from her brilliantly expressive artwork, it's her only way of coping. Since her own mother is too self-absorbed to hear her cries for help, Kendra finds support in others instead, from her therapist and her art teacher, from Sandy, the close family friend who encourages her artwork, and from Meghan, the classmate who's becoming a friend - and maybe more. But the truth about Kendra's abuse is just waiting to explode, with startling, unforeseen consequences. Scars is the unforgettable story of one girl's frightening path to the truth.

I have to admit I am an adult and not a teen. And I read it thinking it was non fiction because I thought I was searching memoirs.
But although I never read non fiction I can honestly say that it is a really riveting book, full of suspense.I couldn't put it down.
The story is so well written with such emphasis on the descriptive images that you can almost touch them.
I listened through an audible book.
So WELL DONE and CONGRATULATIONS to all involved it has been brilliantly written, and enthusiastically and very well read. Thank You.😊

MUST READ!!

I got it for free on Audible. I didn't expect much. I wanted to throw it out after a chapter or two. Now I'm glad I didn't! It's not Stephen King, but it is definitely something WORTH LISTENING! Good job!
I don't want to spoil your pleasure of listening, so I will say no more. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Much better than I could ever expected!

I love this book. As someone who was abused and who still engages in SH because I've never sought therapy, it resonates so clearly. My abuser wasn't my father and I'm not gay so I didn't face those additional challenges but sometimes, through Kendra, it is like Cheryl is writing what I felt - and still do. I want to listen to it again and again.

It really resonates

unafraid is the word that best describes this book. Unafraid to explore those subject we convince ourselves are not taboo until it affects our own at which point we’d rather not talk about it. Self-harm, same partner relationships, child abuse and rape as well as a form of hy[nosis. It’s a bit trite in places but overall, I’d say it’s a powerful book full of teenage emotions which would be normal for the kind of situation she finds herself in. It’s a short read and to the point ending hopefully as well as violently but, as i said, it is just a bit trite at times hence the story rating.

incredibly brave, a bit trite
