Sentado en el relleno de la estufa, recostado en la chimenea y con piernas colgando, estuvo tosiendo mucho rato, luego escupió y buscó a tientas la petaca. Todas las noches se despierta el abuelo después del primer canto de los gallos y allí se sienta, fuma, tose arrancando los esputos de los pulmones y, en los intervalos entre los ahogos, los pensamientos siguen en la imaginación la trocha habitual y trillada. Sólo en una cosa piensa el abuelo: en el hijo desaparecido en la guerra.
