About this listen

Winter, 48 BC. Caesar and his small force are trapped in the Egyptian city of Alexandria. Caught up in the dynastic struggles of the House of Ptolemy, the consul has sided with the clever and ruthless Queen Cleopatra. Her brother and fellow monarch, Ptolemy XIII, languishes in the palace, a hostage of Caesar's, while a huge army under the command of the Egyptian General Achillas closes on the city to free him.

With both the future of this ancient land and the safety of Caesar and his men at stake, Fronto and his friends face the terrible task of holding an unfamiliar city under siege, in the desperate hope that reinforcements will reach them before the enemy break in.

But Egyptian reinforcements gather, too, and with the interference of the youngest princess, Arsinoe, the future is far from written. Trapped, besieged and outnumbered, time is running out for the Romans, as shadows loom across the sands of Egypt.

Great story telling and my fascination with this period in History gets even stronger even if some of the facts and time lines are loose

Fiction loosely based on fact

I was fascinated by the details unveiled about Caesar’s adventure and can’t wait for book 13.

With book 12 it’s only getting better for the reader, but not for Fronto!

Almost non-stop action in this book - and it is so well done! As the ides of March get closer and closer the excitement builds. I clearly don’t want it to end so I’m savouring every word! Thank you to the whole team behind these audiobooks ap

Getting close -beware the Ides!

it's amazing how good the writing is, still after 12 books, detail of geography, everyday life of armies and civilians, and in-depth characters real or fictional. plus horrific battles. Mr turney continues to enthrall and educate. narration is great to with wide range of vocalisation.

continued excellence

Great pace, characters and as close as possible to historical truth as possible… without getting stuffy or boring, love this series.

Another cracking book

There’s a cliche that these are ‘bloke’ novels with a lot of fighting and little characterisation in between. This is the one in the series that comes closest to that. There’s even a preachy bit at the start telling us to print a map out! I will read the whole series but I hope the last few bring back some people being people.

Not the best

Gave up after 8 hours. I expect fight action in Simon Turney's Mules books, but this one is nothing but. Political intrigue you also find in his other books is barely detectable - it may reappear at the end of the book, but I'll never know. One for re-enactors. For me, dull and repetitive.
