About this listen

There was once upon a time a poor miller who had a very beautiful daughter. Now it happened one day that he had an audience with the King, and in order to appear a person of some importance he told him that he had a daughter who could spin straw into gold. "Now that's a talent worth having," said the King to the miller. "If your daughter is as clever as you say, bring her to my palace tomorrow and I'll put her to the test."

When the girl was brought to him he led her into a room full of straw, gave her a spinning wheel and spindle, and said "Now set to work and spin all night till early dawn, and if by that time you haven't spun the straw into gold you shall die." Then he closed the door behind him and left her alone inside.

Editor reviews

Beloved actor Roscoe Orman, also known as Gordon from Sesame Street, is clearly a marvelous and experienced storyteller, and his short performance of this popular fairy tale is full of wonder and fun. Adults and children alike will enjoy the distinctive voices he uses for his characters, from the king's stern, round tones to Rumpelstiltskin's squeaky slyness. Orman uses the right balance of drama and warmth to create a sense of magic, and this recording is ideal to use as a bedtime story for young listeners.

Who doesn't know the classic fairytale of nasty little Rumplestiltzkin, who appears in the Kings's castle during the night, to help the poor miller's daughter spin a room full of straw into gold.
And thus help her survive, as she will die by morning light, if she fails.
But the wee man isn't a warmhearted helper, greed is his motivation.
As it goes with fairytales, he will meet his fate.

I truly enjoyed Roscoe Orman's narration, especially the Rumplestiltzkin part
