About this listen
A high school ruled by small-town politics.
A rural community ruled by rumors.
The truth may set them free. But are they ready for it?
The residents of West Lake are resistant to change and afraid of confrontation. They’re happy to punch in and punch out and complain about the boss man. They’re friendly to your face but spiteful behind your back. They have their farms and their football, but, underneath that small-town veneer, there’s envy and self-hatred and greed.
Principal Janet Wilcox is a modern-day Machiavelli of small-town politics, playing the school board and the community like a banjo. Coach Rick Barnett finds himself squarely in her sights when an up-and-coming quarterback challenges her son’s starting position.
Gwen Townsend’s the new teacher in town. She’s a beautiful woman with a secret. She picked the wrong place to hide from her past. Caleb Miles is her star pupil, a brilliant young writer, questioning his sexuality in a town lacking tolerance. Gwen needs to hide who she was, and Caleb needs to hide who he is.
In a town run on rumors, nobody’s secret is safe.
Adult content and language.
©2018 Phil M. Williams (P)2019 Phil M. WilliamsTristan and Sarah Grace Wright, who narrate this book, have become the ‘sound of Phil M Williams’ Books’ for me as I’ve enjoyed their readings of many of them. As always they deliver a great performance sharing the duties between them as they give life to the author’s characters. A high quality production with first rate performances.

Having recently moved into the area Gwen starts her new teaching job at the local high school, little does she know she is walking into a political minefield where anyone who doesn't see the world in the same way as Principle Janet is a target.
Lies, manipulation, treachery and blackmail are just some of the tools in Janet's toolbox, and she knows how to use them!
A community that is only too willing to bend to the latest rumour, anything to avoid being the latest target.
What could possibly go wrong?
With a large but strong list of characters, Phil takes you on a journey of small town politics and betrayal, where lives are devastated in the fallout of Janet's wake.
Will anyone come out unscathed, will the town ever regain it's humanity.
An excellent story covering a number of difficult topics cleverly interwoven into a narrative that is compelling and heartbreaking.
The narrators are excellent, working together seemlessly to breathe life into all the characters individually.
What harm can a rumour do?

Phil writes relatable characters and includes plenty of twists to keep the plot fresh in all of his books.
I listened to the Audio Book version and the author's choice of narrator fits well with the story
