Rise of the Machine is a hysterical take on the emergence of AI in voice acting. The fact that Jason Clarke, arguably one of the most successful male romance narrators, plays a robot just proves how a robot wouldn't be even half has good as the human playing the robot according to my ears. He was hysterical, and I could not stop laughing as he went through demonstrating the narration tones of different genres. That was not only a fun bit, but it was scarily spot-on!
The all-start cast is reunited, and we get to catch up with our favorites from the first two TWCT plays. Niffer, Andrea, Cameron, Vera, Georgia, Neil, Atticus, Frankie are all back to take on Arty Smarts!
I love this series so much, and it's a go-to when I need to laugh. Erin Mallon can write plays that tug at your heartstrings, plays that make you go "hmmm...." and plays that just make you laugh out loud. All of them are witty and enjoyable. So go pick this up, and all of her plays. You won't regret it.

I cannot adequately express how much I loved this audio play. Erin Mallon is a comedic genius and this cast is brilliant.
Jason Clarke has joined this series and he was the perfect addition. I do not want to spoil anything but this is absolute proof that Jason Clarke is magic and can do anything.

After TWCT and TWCT2 I honestly didn’t think there was any way Erin could improve on the awesomeness, but she pulled it out the bag in the first 30 seconds. A little heads up would’ve been nice though, I spat out perfectly good tea when Neil said the name of his and Atticus’ production company. The comedy was off the charts funny, the banter between the characters was quick and snappy and I will never recover from that rap…lyrical genius! Oh, and the bloopers, I almost pee’d my pants! I can’t wait to see this amazing cast perform live in Vegas in October; it’s going to be hilarious.
The entire cast was incredible, Shane East reprising his role as Cameron, Andi Arndt as Vera, Emma Wilder as Jennifer, Maxine Mitchell as Andrea, Tanya Eby as Georgia, and Erin Mallon as Frankie. I have to shine a spotlight on Joe Arden and Teddy Hamilton who will forever be known as #swallowthejohnson these two were amazing together and that rap, holy shit, Joe was phenomenal supported by Teddy and their harem of ladies. Jason Clarke is a newcomer to the cast as Artie Smarts the AI and my goodness, he puts on a spectacular performance. What a fabulous addition, I couldn’t have loved this more.
If you haven’t listened to these plays that were written by the woman who quite literally can do ANYTHING, where have you been and what have you been doing? Download them all immediately, buckle up and enjoy the fun train. Beep beep boop!

This may be my favorite of all 3 of these audio plays (and my name was in the 2nd one). I laughed from the very beginning all the way through to the bloopers which had me in stitches. This play has humor (obviously) but also, anger, sadness, betrayal, secrecy, deception, danger and of course a little romance. My husband and I listened on a long car ride, and we were both laughing throughout, and sometimes he is a hard sell when it comes to comedy.
This play is fully edited with sound effects that worked really well with the play as a whole when listening on speakers in the car. I finished the play with headphones for the last 5-10 minutes, and some of the effects were a little distracting with my AirPods in, but overall I found they enhanced the listening experience.
This is a play best consumed in one sitting and I fully intend to listen multiple times to pick up on nuances I missed.

She pursues her exploration of the romance world and the audiobook community–authors, narrators and listeners–with a hot topic: the use of artificial intelligence to narrate audiobooks. In her own special way, of course.
Between conversations about parenthood, a narrator’s dream work, and intimacy, she offers her opinion on the value of human narrators to convey emotions. Or not? As you will see, the real problem in this story isn’t the fact that a robot–yes, you read it right–is trying to steal their livelihood, but just that… it’s a robot! She delves into science fiction for her new opus of These walls can talk, and she does it with her usual humor.
Her perfect cast of narrators comes back, with the addition of another amazing narrator for Artie the robot. They all know when to be funny, and when to express deeper emotions. If you don’t get goosebumps at times, and laugh most of the time, you’re listening wrong. The sound effects once again give you the impression that you’re in a theater with closed eyes, enjoying a play just with your ears.

We’re back with the whole gang-Joe Arden (Atticus aka The Narwhal), Tanya Eby (Georgia), Shane East (Cameron), Emma Wilder (Jennifer aka Niffer), Teddy Hamilton (Neil), Andi Arndt (Vera), Maxine Mitchell (Andrea), and Erin Mallon (Narrator and Frankie) all return. And this time, they have Jason Clarke as Artie Smarts with them.
Artie is an AI. In this current climate of authors and companies wanting to use AI in audiobooks (much to listeners objections) it was a very clever and hilarious way to show the downside of it. As will all things Erin there are layers to this story and it also deals with boundaries when people make themselves available on social media. There are some lines that just seem funny at first listen but then stick with you and make you think differently. It’s one of the things I love about Erin’s writing.
Each of the voice actors brings something unique and brilliant to the character they voice. However, Jason Clarke steals the show as Artie. It is like you have never heard him before. Trust me, if you think you’ve heard all sides to Jason, he’s about to prove you wrong.
I will never get enough of this series. I hope there will be more in the future because I love these characters and the look behind the curtain of the audiobook industry. Add in the interactions of the voice actors and it is something special to experience.
