About this listen

The first book in the series by the master of epic fantasy, Raymond E. Feist. Ten years after the cataclysmic events of Wrath of A Mad God took place, Midkenia now faces a new danger thought buried in myth and antiquity.

A lost race of elves, the taredhel or ‘people of the stars’, have found a way across the universe to reach Midkemia. On their current home world, these elves are hard pressed by a ravaging demon horde, and what was once a huge empire has been reduced to a handful of survivors. The cornerstone of taredhel lore is the tale of their lost origins in the world they call simply ‘Home’, a place lost in the mists of time. Now they are convinced that Midkemia is that place, and they are coming to reclaim it.

Ruthless and arrogant, the taredhel intend to let nothing stand in their way; but before long, Pug and the Conclave realise that it's not necessarily the elves, but the demon horde pursuing them where the true danger lies. And hanging over Pug always is the prophecy that he will be doomed to watch everyone he loves die before him…

I'm biased add I loved feist right from his first book the magician, this is the start of another great story but it's a short review as I have to dash of and get the next book right now.

Excellent

to agree with some of the other reviews, i have listened to these audios books in the last year from the magician and well.. to get this far and peter to change accents and voices after the consistency of the rest was a little odd.. dulgan,tomas,pug,casper.. well nearly all of them. also to note the pronouncation of some of the characters names have changed ie cayliss... to kaaliss???

whats with the accent and voice changes?

The ending to this book sneaks up on you and is utterly heartbreaking in its delivery

This was the first audibook of Feist I have listened too. As with the paperback versions I was spellbound. Fantastic narration for a fantastic storyline. Looking foward to more of Feist's work on Audible.

Proffesionally narrated, epic fantasy story.

Fantastic story great narration by Peter Joyce. so I find myself asking who's unbelievably stupid idea wàs it to replace him???? That inspired american accent has not the presence of Peter Joyce and immediately annoys. you have ruined the following books to this one. suggest the idea owner and the new narrator...

A great book

I have enjoyed Peter Joyce’s narration throughout all of the Midkemia books and his characterisation has been consistent.. Why, oh why, has he suddenly changed the voices of some of characters we have all got to know and love? It’s bizarre!

Same characters, different voices?

He's changed the voices for some of the big characters - Tomas sounds like an old Grandad rather than the powerful figure he is.

Casper's lost his accent and for me, it made it very hard to endure those parts of this as an audiobook.

There are other examples too as per the other reviews and it perhaps shows the quality of the production team who didn't pick it up before releasing it.

Worst Peter Joyce Narration in series.

A marvellous example of Raymond E Feist's fantasy story craft. The many disparate characters are seamlessly interwoven into a story that keeps you literally spellbound. Having read most of Feist's earlier works this is up there with the best. Throughout the novel there are tantalising references to previous adventures. It's a shame they aren't yet available to listen to. Can't wait to experience these past favourites if and when they become available on audible.

standard feist, gripping from start to finish. wonderful new and interesting characters are introduced as the plot thickens

more midkemia magic

Jommy now speaks like Eric, Zane speaks like Jommy, Casper sounds like a kingdom man, Dolgan speaks like a human and Tomas sounds like an old man. Seriously jarring changing all the voices after 20 books of consistency...

Poor performance from an excellent performer
