About this listen

From the legendary author of A Walk Among the Tombstones comes this gripping tale of sudden endings and new beginnings.

When a man called Bill spots a sign in a restaurant window, he grabs his carry-on and gets off his bus. Within an hour he's got himself a job as a short-order cook, and a start on a whole new life in Cross Creek, Montana. Things just fall into place. He applies for a library card, and the next thing you know he's having dinner with the librarian. One thing leads to another, and he can see a whole new life stretching out before him.

The narration was good, but the flat character arc left me unsatisfied. It read as a reflection of life rather than a story (i.e., no beginning or end, just a middle).

Bill Thompson doesn't travel to the end of his coach ride, instead descending at Cross Creek, Montana. The advert in the eatery window is for an experienced try cook and he gets a job, then a room, and starts to rebuild his life. In this long short story by Lawrence Block, the reader is introduced to the man who seems to have simple needs, lives a simple ljfe, but always there is an internal demon, a terror haunting his life. Brilliantly written to leave as much doubt as exists in the mind of the drifter himself, Bill is a character who will briefly enter the reader's life only to disappear again after making himself fully real.

Theo Holland narrates, his gentle accented voice capturing the very essence of Bill himself as he thinks his way through from day to day. Well pa ed and cadencex, there is nothing boring in his reading of the text. No fireworks, either, which makes the performance solid and peers fly expressed. Plus he gives separate and appropriations to individual protagonists. Excellent

I downloaded a freely gifted complimentary copy of this book, at my request, from FABC. My thanks to the rights holder for making it available for anyone requesting a copy. This well crafted, slightly downbeat story is well worth reading, a masterclass in character building whilst still maintaining a mystery. Recommended.
