About this listen

After two hundred years of peace something on Pern is shifting - changing weather patterns and volcanic eruptions herald the second Pass of Thread, the hideous scourge that threatens all life on the planet.

As the Weyrs and Holds prepare for the first pass since the loss of Landing and the knowledge of their ancestors, one Lord Holder is refusing to co-operate - denying the existing in thread and damning his people to ignorance and, ultimately, death.

With the first fall on the horizon, his fellow Weyrleaders and Lord Holders must find a way to bring him into line and make sure the planet is safe.

I have loved the stories of Pern ever since I first discovered them nearly fifty years ago in my twenties. Although well executed, I found the narration hard to stomach due to the patronising/condescending tone of voice used, as though reading a story to rather dim children. The lady has a clear speaking voice, and if she is to read more of these books, I would ask that she simply reads them as to an adult of average intelligence without any of her little sniggers where she feels one should find humour.

Narration spoilt the experience for me

I was totally absorbed in this. The story deftly introduces new characters and weaves them into a story that helps fill in some background to the early Pern stories. I enjoyed the narration which adds a wry dimension to both characters and plot and I hope Jilly Bond does more of the later Pern novels. Veryenjoyable.

An absorbing listen.

I've read all of Anne McCaffrey's books repeatedly and have gradually bought the audio versions where they are available, as I can't hold books or swipe on my Kindle anymore. I nearly didn't buy this one, as the reviews about the narration weren't good, but I'm glad I did. I didn't have a problem with the narrator's voice, and I didn't hear any sniggers. I thoroughly enjoy listening to the story.

I didn't think it would be possible to not enjoy a Pern book, I have loved them for so many years and was excited about this new release, but it took a real effort to keep listening to this. The narration is terrible. I'm sure it might be fine for other books, but the narrator does too much, it feels incredibly patronising and very irritating. Absolutely ruined this book for me, unfortunately.

Wonderful book, terrible narration
