About this listen

Bath-based BBC Audiobooks hosted a sell-out event for the Bath Literature Festival. Reading Between the Lines: From Page to Production featured Rula Lenska, Lynne Truss, Sir Derek Jacobi, and Lorelei King in an entertaining and lively discussion about the art of the audiobook. They were joined by Sunday Times audio critic Karen Robinson, BBC Audiobooks' Publishing Director Jan Paterson, and Senior Producer Kate Thomas.

The panel discussed all aspects of what makes a good audiobook. Topics debated ranged from casting, production, recording, accents, pronunciation, translation, and editing. Rula Lenska, Sir Derek Jacobi, and Lorelei King are all highly respected readers having recorded numerous titles for BBC Audiobooks and other publishers. Lynne Truss appears in the audiobook versions of her two best sellers Eats, Shoots and Leaves and Talk to the Hand.

It reveals the considerations from a publishing, editing, and performance perspective of audio book publishing. What about page-turns? Do you rehearse? Whether to use mood sounds and background music? How many performers should there be? How long from decision to publish a book in audio format to final 'cut'?

Presented as a discussion panel with an audience - true overview of the medium.

This free download features a fascinating discussion and Q & A session about the production of audio books. The panel feature a producer, a director, an actor and a critic and they offer offer up some very interesting insight into the process a book goes through before it gets to our ears. The panel features staff from the BBC who have produced some brilliant and best selling productions between them.
This download is the nearest thing I've come across to a DVD style 'making of' or 'special feature' for audio books and I really enjoyed it.
I recommend it to anyone who enjoys spoken word productions enough to have an audible subscription.

There is more to it than a good listen. This gives a glimpse of what production goes into each story. It is like putting on a play. There is a lot of hard work that has to happen before the smooth, seamless story unfolds and we settle down to a good read.

Great to have a glimpse behind the curtain.

Behind every good audio book

I strongly recommend audio book fans to listens to this panel discussion involving the readers, editor and producers. It reminds us how much we owe to the diligence and hard-work put in by the people who take pains to study the texts so that they can make the books come alive for us to enjoy. I am constantly amazed by the skills of the readers in differentiating the various characters by employing different accents and tones of voice. I have long realized that a lot of preparation must be involved. But this recording of the discussion is not just interesting, but is also very lively and entertaining.

Entertaining and interesting

How it's done!

I've just listened to this and found some of it quite interesting and several times wanted to butt in myself and comment but I was dismayed that a member of the panel was allowed to give away the ending of the book 'Gentlemen and Players' by Joanne Harris. I was currently reading (not listening to) this book and there was no warning that the twist in the tale would be revealed. I suppose I will finish reading but the fact that the ending has been revealed has spoiled it for me.

Interesting - but beware
