About this listen

Rainbow Dash takes up a series of tricky challenges after being inspired by the hero of her favourite book series, Daring Do. Rainbow Dash is a huge fan of the Daring Do book series, but after the newest book comes out, she's not alone. Suddenly, every pony in Ponyville is reading the books!

To prove she's the ultimate fan, Rainbow Dash decides to show her friends that she can be just as brave and daring as her hero. But Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow's other friends worry about how far she's willing to go. Just how daring should one pony be?

To deny this story for any MLP:FiM fans would be an insult at best. The plot follows a conventional story about biting off more than you can chew - and yet, simply because of Rainbow Dash, it works! Rainbow, though she is loyal (and, in her own words, 'so awesome!'), is also cocky, foolhardy and quick to make decisions, so she is perfect for a story of this kind! The plot is faithful to, and feels like an episode of, the TV series - it spins a tale of fantasy, friendship and magic (of course), while providing a witty pastiche of popular culture, such as multiple references to the Indiana Jones franchise.

The main issue here is the narration. I can look past its syrupy tone (since it's for the kids), but there are moments when the narrator lacks the enthusiasm that Rainbow embodies (that first 'Omygosh! Omygosh! Omygosh!' sounds too dry to me). Not only that, but Spike's voice does not suit his character. Instead of his deeper, educated voice as per the TV show, he is given a raspy voice that sounds like one of the other characters.

However, I feel it appropriate to say that, despite these faults on the narrator's part, this story is sure to be a hit for all MLP:FiM fans (or, should I say, 'fillies and gentlecolts'), regardless of their age.

(Almost) A Perfect Rainbow!
