About this listen

At an annual party to celebrate the success of the racing season, everything seemed to be running well to form, including the need for more champagne. Then a runaway horsebox ploughed into the marquee. A witness to the terrible death and destruction, wine merchant Tony Beach knows it is just one of those tragic accidents. But when his expert advice is called into play over sub-standard alcohol in a local night club, connections start to click, and another person dies, horribly.©1984 Dick Francis (P)2014 Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd. As enjoyable as ever even if you have no interest in either horses or the wine trade! The writing draws you in from the start. Really well read.

Brilliant

Another great story by the master. Shame about the quality of the recording, often it sounded rather muffled.

Good yarn

this is another brilliant book from the legendary Dick Francis, one of my favourites given new depth by this format
I have become used to Tony Brittons narration although his voice is a bit plummy for my taste
my only criticism is the variable sound levels and poor recording quality as there is intermittent white noise in the background and occasional level changes

one of the best

Great story, old recording which is a shame because it is a good performance. Maybe AI could clean it up

Dick Francis writes some brilliant thrillers, but this is my favourite. Last listened to it probably 30 years ago and so pleased I returned for another listen.

Horses, yes, but only as a backdrop to a story more about the wine and whiskey trade. Don’t worry, plenty of criminal suspense in good measures too. Makes you want to settle down and listen with a good bottle of red or a thought provoking Malt (if you like a tipple).

Recording quality is really quite poor in places, but the story more than offsets it and Tony Britton such a good narrator.

Raise a glass to this story - fantastic!

This is one of the best among the several I have listened to by this writer who continues to move up my list of favorites. I look forward to his other novels.

Great and well read story but the recording quality is appalling. The background hissing succeeds in ruining the listening experience.

Great story, poor recording

As ever genius

Gripping story, elegantly read by Tony Britton. The sheer decency, generosity and touching humanity of the main characters makes you long for a past age. And thrown in, as you would expect, a host of fascinating detail regarding the racing world - and a little of the wine-producing world too. But overall, a gripping, satisfying listen.

Great Stuff

If the sound level of recording was fixed…. This is obviously an old recording. The quality of the production is far below what I expect from an Audible book.

Despite that, I enjoyed the story and the narration was excellent. It was the editing and post production that let it down.
