About this listen

From the best-selling author of The Templars, Dan Jones' epic new history tells nothing less than the story of how the world we know today came to be built.

Across 16 chapters, blending Dan Jones' trademark gripping narrative style with authoritative analysis, Powers and Thrones shows how, at each stage in this story, successive Western powers thrived by attracting - or stealing - the most valuable resources, ideas and people from the rest of the world. It casts new light on iconic locations - Rome, Paris, Venice, Constantinople - and it features some of history's most famous and notorious men and women.

This is a book written about - and for - an age of profound change, and it asks the biggest questions about the West both then and now. Where did we come from? What made us? Where do we go from here?

I am a fan of the author's works and this does not disappoint. It was particularly sobering to listen to the book as events in Ukraine unfolded. There were so many compare and contrast moments.
Good narration style, although I did wince at the pronunciation of some German towns, particularly Mainz.

Great dash through European history up to 1530

I have never encountered a book that covers so much historical ground. I chose it because my knowledge of the Middle Ages was limited. I couldn’t have had a better guide through these centuries. I feel like I want to go straight back to the beginning and start again to consolidate my understanding! Well done Dan Jones! And you did make it fun!

An incredible masterpiece!

Powers and Thrones was an epic book. Each account was so well narrated by Dan Jones that I was never bored by it. It was brilliantly researched and put in language that was so easy to comprehend.
I didn't listen to the book in its entirety but kept going back to it when I had finished a book and was waiting for credit day. The nature of the book allows you to do this as each chapter stands alone, describing a period in history or a story behind a ruler.
It is the sort of book that I could listen to again.

Many stories so well narrated by the author.

This is a complex, well researched book. Dan Jones narrating his own material really adds to the experience.

Excellent title

The author narrates the book and brings an engaging and fascinating look at this massive topic. History always reflects on current affairs and I learnt a lot. Very accessible book.

Interesting and lively telling of Power struggles in the middle ages

Great journey though over a 1000 years of history. Dan is as brilliant of an author as he is a narrator. I recommend this to anyone!

The largest in scope of any Dan Jones project that I've encountered. As a consequence, events can be tricky to keep in your head especially with an audiobook, but if this is a fault of the author's it is only in ambition.

Superbly written with a view to taking you into the lives of its subjects, definite recommendation for anyone interested in the period or who has previously enjoyed Dan Jones' writings

Quality again
