Die ersten Spielkarten wurden vermutlich von den Chinesen im 13. Jahrhundert verwendet. Europa erreichten sie etwa zu Beginn der zweiten Hälfte des 14. Jahrhunderts über Ägypten. Das Spiel wurde um etwa 1829 von französischen Siedlern nach New Orleans in die Vereinigten Staaten gebracht. Einen Aufschwung in der Beliebtheit erlebte Poker bei Beginn der World Series of Poker (WSOP) Anfang der 1970er Jahre. Davor galt es als reines Glücksspiel, ohne strategische Elemente.
